RPM Speedway wraps up inaugural season
By Mike Hughes

HAYS, KS (Sept. 24, 2006) - Rolling Plains Motor Speedway in Hays, KS, wrapped its first season of racing action Sunday evening, September 24.

Salina’s Corey Lagroon topped a 25-car IMCA Modified field to win the feature race. Salina (KS) Speedway point champion Jerry Phillips finished second, followed by Lonnie Schriner, track champion at The Speed Bowl in Red Cloud, NE. Dustin Daniels and B-feature winner Marty Clark rounded out the top five. Heat race winners were Lagroon, Phillips, and Mike Petersilie. Ronnie Hill of Sharon Springs won the track championship by a mere point over Clark. This was Hill’s first season in a modified.

Wakeeney’s Travis Sherfick held off heat two winner ‘The Taz Man’ Tyler Hahn of Stockton to win the IMCA Stock Car main event and claim his second feature of the season at the 3/8-mile oval. Terry Cunningham finished third, followed by J.R. McCreery and Jason Davis. Willie Wynn won the other heat race. Cunningham’s third place feature finish was good enough to win the points title by one point over both Sherfick and Jason Rogers.

Veteran Jerry Hudson of Athol won the IMCA Hobby Stock feature. Adam Balthazor was second, followed by Brian Conness, Dustin McClurg and heat one winner Jim Buss. Heat two winner Kyle Bond finished sixth. McClurg, of Logan, was crowned the track champion by 2 points over Gene Sneath.

Gem’s Jeremy Blackwill hit a triple in the Bomber division. Blackwill won the first of two heat races, then won the feature race (his fifth of the season), which easily gave him the track championship for 2006. Heat two winner Duane Wahrman finished in the runner-up spot in the main event, trailed by Bobby Denning, Todd Lutters and Josh Latka.

The staff and management at Rolling Plains Motor Speedway would like to thank all the track sponsors, track personnel, volunteers, drivers and fans for their support in 2006.
