Murray, Hudson, Dauer Wakeeney winners
By Mike Hughes

WAKEENEY, KS (May 13)—Racing action returned to Wakeeney (KS) Speedway Sunday evening, May 13, with the regular four divisions in action.

Jeff Tubbs jumped out to the early lead of the 20-lap IMCA Modified feature, but gave way to Mark Zorn on lap 6. But Zorn’s lead was short-lived as Oberlin’s David Murray Jr. took the lead on the next lap and led the remaining distance to the checkers. The lone caution came on lap 12 when Marty Clark spun, and the field bunched up behind Murray on the restart, but Murray was able to make the low line work and drove away to the checkers. Bryan Lariviere gave chase but had to settle for second, followed by Corey Lagroon, Zorn, and Dustin Daniels. Heat race winners were Tubbs, Jason Schoenberger, Murray, and Jim Bell, while Rob Day took honors in the B-feature.

Josh Hudson of Kensington led all 20 laps of the IMCA Stock Car feature to make his way to victory lane. Cory Struckhoff, Tyler Hahn and Travis Towns lined up behind Hudson, and a couple of restarts kept the top 4 close most of the way. At the checkers, it was Hudson, Struckhoff, Hahn, Towns, and Jay Hachmeister. Hudson and Struckhoff won the two heat races.

Marquette’s B.J. Dauer took advantage of his outside front row starting position to claim victory in the 15-lap IMCA Hobby Stock feature, leading the entire distance. The race got off to a scary start when Plainville’s Phil Hinger rolled coming out of turn 2 on the second lap. Hinger was okay but done for the evening. Three more caution flags kept the field close but Dauer was up to the challenge. Jerry Hudson finished second, trailed by Dustin McClurg, Austin Davis, and heat two winner Brian Conness. Dauer and Adam Balthazor won the other two heat races.

Joe & Jim Carter of Russell won the Cruiser/Econo heat race, then came back and led all 15 laps in the main event. Tony Driscoll & Ron Watson finished second, followed by Don Strecker.

Racing action returns to Wakeeney Speedway Memorial weekend with the 7th Annual 2-day Memorial Challenge. The regular 4 divisions will be joined by the NCRA and ASCS Rocky Mountain Region 360 Sprint Cars on Sunday evening, May 27, with the regular 4 divisions back in action the following night Monday, May 28. Race time each evening is 6:00 p.m.
