Jon Johnson Takes The Win At RPM Speedway
by: Terry J Pfeifer

HAYS, KS (May 25) - The United Rebel Sprint Series made it first trip to the Rolling Plains Motor Speedway for the 2007 Season, with 26 Teams pulling through the gates for some fast and furious racing action. Racers were faced with a fast but rough track as Mother Nature played havoc during the week with over 3 inches of rain, but the staff at the RPM Speedway had it in race able shape for the event.

Kinsley, Kansas’ Darren Bowman lead the field to the green, with Hill City, Kansas’ Larry Radcliffe on the outside pole. It didn’t take long for the action Dodge City’s Brian Herbert charged his way to the 2nd spot by the end of lap one. Ransom, Kansas’ Smokey Fairbank made his way from his 7th starting spot to third by the end of lap number two, with 9th starting Jon Johnson form Utica, Kansas quietly picked his way to the fourth spot by the end of lap three. Back in the pack, Kansas City, Kansas driver Corey Lutters had parlayed his 13th started place to run up to the 7th position by lap five only to have ignition troubles force him to pull off a couple laps later. North Platte Nebraska’s Tom Belsky made the most of his 6th place starting spot and held tough as Reed Bernbeck, Ken Lutters, and Mike Spear all battled for the 6th spot for several laps before Bernbeck took the spot on lap ten.

Last weeks winner, Nick King of Hays, Kansas came from his 15th starting spot to take the 9th position by lap twelve. As Johnson and Herbert worked their way through lapped traffic, the battle for the third spot heated up as Fairbank and Radcliffe fought for several laps with Radcliffe finally taking the spot for good on lap thirteen.

Bernbeck, Spear and King were in a heated battle for the 6th position, with Bernbeck besting the pair as they raced through traffic. But up front Herbert tried to find a way around Johnson to no avail as the Dirt Track Veteran took his first URSS win of the 2007 Season. Rounding out the top five were Radcliffe, Fairbank and Seeman.

Heat races winners were Seeman, Herbert, Bowman, and Johnson with Cody Salem taking the win in the B-Main. The Weld Racing Wheels “Hard Charger Award” of the race went to Jon Johnson.
