Kerry Davis Climbs Back To The Top Of Modified Division, First Grand National Win Goes To Gilbert & Is Tim Shields Superman?

KANSAS CITY, KS (May25) - Things seem to be back in line at Lakeside Speedway. For the first time in a long while, Mother Nature has spared Lakeside for 2 consecutive weeks. Racing action at Lakeside isn't following the norm. As a matter of fact it is turing into a downright barn burner.

Kerry Davis has been a consistent competitor at Lakeside since the track went back to dirt. In two different divisions, Davis, has captured more than 30 wins over the past 6 years. Davis is not letting any of his fans down in '07, as he notched his 2nd modified win of the season.

"Gene was running really hard tonight and some guys were trying to poke up their underneath him," said Davis, ",,,my dad has been telling me I need more patienc. So I was waiting for my time and I finally got him on the high side on the restart."

"I want to say that our hearts are heavy and were thinking about Mike Clark (Dirt Works Race Car Owner) and all of them. We are tickled to death that he got through surgery and everythings good and we are going to dedicate this one to him."

After missing out on the victory last week, Davis took to the high side and kept up the momentum and held off last week's winner, John Allen, in the process.

Gene Claxton motored his way to the front of the field in the first couple of laps. For more than half the race Claxton would hold the lead and look strong doing it. This season Claxton is working exclusively on his modified program. A strong run tonight proves that Claxton is just one step away from becoming lightning fast.

"All the years I have raced its been easier to tighten the car up than to loosen it and were fighting it, it's too tight but we are getting there," said Claxton, " It's going to be good once we get it all lined out and to run in the top 5 here, you are runnin pretty good."

Tom Charles turned in a solid effort with a 3rd place finish, Claxton finished in the fourth spot and rounding out the top 5 was Tim Karrick.

Heat race winners on the night were.... Danny Charles, Allan Lawrence, Mike Taylor and Terry Bruner.

Winning for the first time can get anyone excited. Especially when you get your first win at Lakeside Speedway. In the Grand National division, Dustin Gilbert found out just how good that feeling was after winning the feature Friday night.

"It's pretty exciting," said Gilbert, "there's a lot of talented drivers out here, I can't believe I won."

It shouldn't have been that hard of stretch for most of the fans who where at Lakeside one week ago. Gilbert led for a majority of the laps last week before having an ignition wire come off during the feature. This week there were no problems.

Barring the multiple tries to get the race started, Gilbert, put himself in the lead position and held on it until the end. He had to hold off some strong advances by Jeff Miles. It was the first win for the young, 18 year old driver from Lawrence, Kansas.

Travis Duncan put together one of his best runs at Lakeside and finished in the 3rd spot while last week's top 5 finisher, Jim Baker finished 4th.

A hard fought run was turned in by last week's feature winner, Nic Bidinger. Bidinger got caught up in an early accident, but bounced back as he darted through traffic to finish in the 5th posititon.

Heat race winners were... Jeff Miles, Scotty Martin and Jeff Smith.

Look up in the sky! It's a bird, it's a plane, nope it's Tim Shields. Shields was the Factory Stock feature winner for the 3rd cosecutive time this year. If you ask his competitors about Shields that might tell you that he is faster than a locomotive.

Friday night Shields took over the lead on lap 7 and by lap 8 he was long gone. The combination of driver and car can never be better for Shields, who has yet to lose a race at Lakeside in '07. By the end of the feature event, Shields had a half track lead over 2nd place.

The battle for the remaining spots showed just how tough racing is at Lakeside Speedway. Bud Wallis and Tyler Schmidt both gave 110% to catch Shields, but they just couldnt get it done. Schmidt would garner yet another fine finish in 2nd with Wallis coming in 3rd. Marshall Jewett had his best run in a factory stock to date, 4th, and Bill Ruisinger finished in the 5th position.

Heat race winners were... Jay Kelly, Edward Meyers, Brenn Wagner and Tim Shields.
