Johnson Takes Second URSS Win At “Duel in Dodge II”
by: Terry J Pfeifer
DODGE CITY, KS. (June 2) - Dodge City Raceway Park was the site for the
Second Installment of the “Duel in Dodge” and race fans were not disappointed as
30 305 Sprint Cars pulled through the gate to do battle with the ‘Kansas
Tornado” Jon Johnson picking up his second URSS victory of the season.
Taylor Valasquez brought the field to green flag with outside pole-sitter Kirby
Hagans quickly taking the lead on lap one. Sixth starting Brian Herbert and last
weeks winner at the Jetmore Motorplex, made his way to the 3rd spot with 8th
starting Jon Johnson following in the 4th position. Second place in points Cody
Salem, who was running in the 5th position pulled in the pits on lap two with
ignition problems for the second weekend in a row. Hagans pulled out to a
healthy lead and looked to have the field covered, but Johnson had worked his
way to the 2nd position by lap six.
Lap nine saw 4th place Brian Herbert lose an engine and come to a stop in turn
four. On the restart, Hagans once a gain pulled away with Johnson, Valasquez and
Crook in hot pursuit. Lap 12 saw Keefe Hemel work his way up to the 5th position
with Brooke Boyd and URSS Points Leader Smokey Fairbank battling Hemel for the
position. Crook finally got around the 21 of Valasquez and set his sights on
Johnson for the 2nd position. Lap 17 saw the 5th place car of Hemel slow and
pull into the infield.
B-Main #2 winner Justin Schwien quietly worked his way from his 12th place
starting position to the 6th position by lap 20 and set his sights on Fairbanks.
On lap 22, Johnson used a lapped car as a pick and took the lead away from
Hagans and never looked back as he took the checkers with Hagans, Crook, Boyd
and Fairbank rounding out the Top Five.
The Weld Racing Wheels “Hard Charger of the Race” was Jon Johnson started in the
8th Position and took the victory.
