Johnson Races To URSS Win At Dawson County Raceway
by: Terry J Pfeifer
OBERLIN, KS (Aug 5) - The United Rebel Sprint Series made their second
appearance at the Dawson County Raceway with the racing action as hot as the
temperature. When it was all said and done the “Kansas Tornado” Jon Johnson
picked up his fourth win of the 2007 Season.
Leading the field to the green was Michael Oliver along with teammate Greg
Thyfault, as the cars entered turn one Doug Roth’s mount made contact with the
inside wall sending his car into a series of pirouettes landing on all four
wheels. Roth was okay but his car suffered enough damage to end his night.
On the restart, Ken Lutters made the low groove work to his advantage and took
the lead followed by Seventh starting Cody Salem ninth starter Smokey Fairbank
to the second and third positions by the end of lap one. Salem and Fairbank
continued to chase Lutters as the trio of Jon Johnson, Justin Schwien and Randy
Bantam started their charge to the front on lap three. Lap nine saw Johnson make
the pass on Fairbank for the third spot.
Lap eleven saw the battle for the lead heat up as Johnson and Schwien were
putting the pressure on Lutters for the top spot. Johnson made the pass at the
flag stand on lap twelve with Schwien taking the runner up spot on lap fifteen.
Further back in the pack Salem, Fairbank and Bantam battled it out for the
fourth through sixth positions.
Johnson never had a challenge as he took the checkers followed by Schwien,
Lutters, Salem and Fairbank rounding out the top five.
Heat Race winners were Johnson, Salem and Schwien. The Weld Racing Wheels “Hard
