WAKEENEY, KS (August 5)—Feature action was close at Wakeeney (KS) Speedway Sunday evening, August 5.

In the IMCA Modified feature, Barry Maupin took the early lead, followed by Matt Fabrizius, John Fabrizius, Mark Zorn and Corey Lagroon. Maupin led the field back to green on lap 6 after a caution, but was then passed by Mark Zorn. At the halfway mark, it was Zorn, Matt Fabrizius, Lagroon, Galva’s Jerry Phillips and Maupin. After a caution on lap 16, Phillips then worked his way to the top spot on lap 17. A late caution set up a green-white-checkered finish. Zorn was committed to the bottom line while Phillips stayed up top. At the finish line, Phillips won by mere inches over Zorn. Lagroon, Matt Fabrizius and Maupin rounded out the top five. Heat race winners were Zorn, Maupin and Lagroon.

Hometown driver Terry Cunningham looked to be on his way to winning his first IMCA Stock Car feature of the year. Cunningham led the first 18 laps of the 20-lap race before heat one winner Cory Struckhoff of Kensington made the pass after hounding Cunningham for several laps. Struckhoff held off Cunningham for his second Wakeeney win of the season. Jeremy Blackwill, Travis Towns and Ryan Wark completed the top five, with heat two winner Tyler Hahn sixth.

Duane Wahrman shot to the lead of the 15-lap IMCA Hobby Stock feature, but was passed on lap 3 by Brian Conness of Hays. The top six stayed close the first half of the race, but the last half saw Conness, Travis Glassman and Wahrman pull away. Coness held on to win his first feature of the year with Glassman and Wahrman close behind. Heat one winner Jerry Hudson was fourth, followed by Brian Hilbert. Glassman won the other heat race.

Norman Weichman of Scott City and Milo Lippelmann of Oberlin teamed up to win their third Cruno feature of the year. Alfred Emmons led the first half of the 15-lap race before Weichman & Lippelman took the lead on lap 8 and led the remaining distance for the victory. Emmons finished second, followed by Daniel Erwin & Travis Blide. Weichman & Lippelmann also won the heat race.

The next points race will be at Rooks County Speedway in Stockton, KS, during the Rooks County Fair on Wednesday and Thursday, August 15-16. The IMCA-sanctioned Modifieds, Stock Cars and Hobby Stocks will be in action starting at 7:00 p.m. each night. This will be a points race for Wakeeney Speedway.

The next show at Wakeeney Speedway will be the season finale on September 16 at 6:00 p.m.
