By Mike Hughes
NORTON, KS (August 18)—Racing action returned to Elmwood Park Speedway in
Norton, KS, Saturday evening, August 18.
Barry Maupin led the first 8 laps of the 20-lap IMCA Modified feature before
Colby’s John Fabrizius took over the top spot. Heat two winner Fabrizius then
pulled away for this third victory of the season. Maupin finished second,
followed by heat one winner Matt Fabrizius, Gary Kline and Tim Watts.
In the IMCA Stock Car feature, Robert Rutherford and Jay Hachmeister swapped the
lead in the opening laps. Hachmeister was then passed by Kensington’s Josh
Hudson on lap 6 and Hudson slowly pulled away from the field enroute to his
third win on the ½-mile oval this year. National point leader Cory Struckhoff
was second, followed by Jason McCartney, Dan Lauer and Travis Sherfick.
Hachmeister and Hudson won the two heat races.
Frank McClurg took the lead at the drop of the green in the 14-lap IMCA Hobby
Stock feature. The lone caution waved on lap 6 when runner-up Gene Sneath lost a
wheel. Frank McClurg led the field back to green with Jerry Hudson, Dustin
McClurg and hometown driver Kelly Karnopp in tow. Karnopp finally made the
winning pass on lap 12 and held on for his second win, followed by Frank McClurg,
heat two winner Hudson, Ricky Runnion and Rhett Kingsbury. Sneath won the other
heat race.
The 4-cylinder Young Guns saw hometown driver Drew Eagleburger find his way to
victory lane in the main event, his second time this season at Elmwood Park.
Loyd Schoen was second, followed by Dusty Eagleburger and heat race winner Art
Herzog.
The final night of racing for 2007 at Elmwood Park Speedway is set for this
