RPM Speedway hosts Fall Nationals

HAYS, KS (Sept. 21) - Over 130 race cars converged on RPM Speedway in Hays, KS, Friday evening, September 21, for the first night of the 2-day Fall Nationals.

A $1,000 winner’s check awaited the victor of the IMCA Modified feature. Outside polesitter Mark ‘The Z Man’ Zorn took the lead at the drop of the green, trailed by track champion Corey Lagroon of Salina, Randy Washburn, and current national point leader David Murray Jr. of Oberlin. Murray worked his way forward and took the lead on lap 5 of the 25-lap race. A couple of cautions kept the field close but Murray was up to the task and was first to the checkers. Eddie Martin finished second, followed by Lagroon, Zorn and Washburn. Heat race winners included Bob Zoubek, Matt Rucker, Ronnie Hill, Murray, Washburn, Lagroon, Zorn, and Nick Tubbs. Four B-features also took to the track with Larry Sutton, Martin, Jeremy Frenier and Jerry Phillips taking the honors.

Brian Lariviere of Wichita led all 20 laps of the IMCA Stock Car feature. The lone caution came on lap 4 when Willie Wynn stalled on the track. At the halfway mark, Lariviere was followed by Josh Hudson, Cory Struckhoff and RPM Speedway track champion Travis ‘The Terminator’ Sherfick of Wakeeney. Hudson and Struckhoff followed Lariviere across the checkers, with Zach Schultz and Jason Davis finishing fourth and fifth. Jason Smidt, Sherfick, J.R. McCreery and Lariviere were all victorious in their heat races, with Terry Cunningham claiming the win in the B-feature.

Adam Balthazor of Stockton continued his domination in the IMCA Hobby Stock division, claiming his fifth feature win of the season and fourth in a row. Dustin McClurg of Logan led the first 18 laps of the 20-lap A-feature before Balthazor worked his way to the front. Balthazor led the final 2 laps for the win, followed closely by McClurg, Brian Conness, B.J. Dauer and RPM Speedway track champion Jerry Hudson of Kensington. Heat race winners included Dauer, McClurg, and Balthazor, with Josh Latka first to the wire in the ‘Green Hornet’ in the B-feature.

Heat two winner Kevin Hackett took the early lead in the IMCA Sport Compact main event. Hackett continued to lead to the halfway mark of the 15-lap race before heat one winner Brian Davidson of Minneapolis took over the top spot on lap 9. Davidson pulled away to the checkers, followed by Hackett and RPM Speedway track champion Dave Junemann of Hays.
