Murray snags win number 393
By Mike Hughes

NORTON, KS (May 3) - Oberlin’s David Murray Jr. won his first IMCA Modified feature win of the season at Elmwood Park Speedway in Norton, KS, Saturday evening, May 3, his 393rd in his IMCA racing career.

Barry Maupin took the lead at the drop of the green of the modified feature from his outside front row starting spot, but the first caution waved on the following lap when Murray spun. Race officials claimed contact by Matt Fabrizius caused the spin, giving Murray his spot back. On lap 4, Murray got by Maupin and went unchallenged the remaining distance in the 20-lap race. A caution on lap 12 bunched up the field, but Murray pulled away easily to the checkers. Maupin finished second, followed by Mitch Kline, Josh Hudson and Clay Bontrager. Heat race winners were Maupin, Murray, and Randy Wilson.

The IMCA Stock Car feature had a wild finish. Arnold Williams of Russell led all but the final lap of the caution filled race. Williams, Jason McCartney, Jason Davis and Cory Struckhoff were all battling for the top four spots late in the race. As the field entered turn 4 coming to the checkers, contact was made among the drivers, allowing hometown driver Davis to move to the bottom and sneak by for the win. McCartney came across second, followed by Struckhoff, Williams, and Jay Hachmeister. Following the race, track officials docked McCartney 2 positions for rough driving. Williams and Travis Sherfick claimed heat race wins.

The IMCA Hobby Stock feature got off to a wild start. Joey Carter led the opening lap before Logan’s Frank McClurg rolled in turn 3 on the following lap, bringing out the red flag. McClurg was okay but done for the night. Carter led the field back to green, but was passed on the following lap by Phillipsburg’s Ricky Runnion. Heat one winner Carter held to second until lap 10 when he had problems. Another caution on lap 14 set up a green-white-checkered finish. Runnion led the field back to green, trailed by Austin Davis, Kelly Karnopp, heat two winner Rhett Kingsbury and Jerry Hudson. They remained that way to the checkers.

Runnion also won the cash dash, which was sponsored by McMullen & Wyatt Auction Service of Norton.

The Mod Lites made a special appearance, and Bennington’s Brandon Gray took the lead on lap 6 from Travis Smith and was first to the checkers in their feature race. Heat one winner Bud Lee finished second, followed by Troy Wente. Gray won the other heat race.

Art Herzog of Hays led all 6 laps of the 4-cylinder Young Gun feature, as did Oberlin’s Dalton Dolan in the Mini Truck feature.

The evening’s races were sponsored by Nex-Tech Rural Telephone. They provided prizes to the fans, and rides for the kids on their mini train during intermission. Lightning Jack also made an appearance.

The next race at Elmwood Park Speedway in Norton will take place Saturday evening, May 17, at 7:00 p.m. with the regular four divisions in competition, along with the GOTRA (Good Ol’ Time Racing Association). It will also be Schwabie t-shirt night with all fans wearing Rick Schwab racing t-shirts admitted free.
