RPM Speedway kicks off 2008 season
By Mike Hughes

HAYS, KS (May 9)– RPM Speedway in Hays, KS, opened the 2008 racing season Friday night, May 9, with Ladies Night. ‘Mom’ Holiday was on hand for a meet and greet, and the BST Modified Series joined the regular four divisions in racing action.

Forty-one IMCA Modifieds checked in for racing action, and after 5 heat races and 2 B-features, the A-main was set. Wayne Brooks led the first 3 laps before David Murray Jr. of Oberlin took a lead he would not relinquish. The caution flag waved several times during the 25-lap race, but each time Murray would lead the field back to green. After the final caution on lap 22 when heat one winner Brooks spun, Murray was able to hold off Danny Morrison for the victory, his 396th career IMCA win, and keeping his winning streak intact with the BST series. Dominic Ursetta finished third, followed by Jeremy Frenier and Ronnie Hill. Other heat race winners included Corey Lagroon, Murray, Jerry Teel, and Will Brack. Matt Rucker and Iowa’s Rich Lewerke were victorious in the two B-features.

Jay Hachmeister took the lead at the drop of the green of the 20-lap IMCA Stock Car feature. J.R. McCreery took over the top spot on lap 5 and led the field to the halfway mark. By lap 15, Arnold Williams took the lead, only to be passed by Wakeeney’s Travis Sherfick on the following lap. After a restart on lap 17, Sherfick led Cory Struckhoff, Williams, and McCreery back to the flagstand. Sherfick held on for the win, trailed by Struckhoff, McCreery, Tracy Holloway, and Hachmeister. Sherfick and McCreery won the two heat races.

Josh Latka led the opening lap of the IMCA Hobby Stock feature in the ‘Green Hornet’, but gave way to Russell’s Joey Carter on lap 2. Carter’s lead was short-lived as heat three winner Ricky Runnion of Phillipsburg took command. Runnion was able to get past traffic and survived contact with another car on the last lap to take the win. Heat one winner Dustin Forsberg finished a close second, followed by Joe Couse, Carter, and Latka. B.J. Dauer also won a heat race.

Fourteen IMCA Sport Compacts were on hand, and Donnie Cleveland led the first lap of the main event before Robert McAfee of Lincoln made the pass for the lead. Monte Benien took the lead on lap 6, but one lap later McAfee regained the lead and held on for the win. Heat one winner Benien was second, with Michael Smith, Art Herzog and Russ Black rounding out the top five. Corey Kindlesporger won the second heat.

The evening’s race sponsor was Discovery Drilling.
Racing action returns to RPM Speedway Friday, May 23, with the regular four divisions in action. It will also be Merchants Night. Race time is 7:30 p.m.
