Thrilling Outcomes In All Classes; Lawrence Breaks Through In Modifieds, Bidinger Gets #5 & Kaster Makes Last Corner Pass For Factory Glory
Post Race Tech Still Continues In The Grand National Division

by: Larry Lowrey Jr.

KANSAS CITY, KS (May 23) -Hollywood couldn't have wrote this script any better tonight for all the Lakeside Speedway feature races. Just ask any of the fans that were in the house!

Allen Lawrence is one of those racers that have been trying to make a name for himself in the modified ranks at Lakeside Speedway. He has won races at Lakeside before, unfortunately they have been in other classes, not the modifieds. He might have just changed all of that Friday night with his 1st win in a modified!

"This feels unbelievable," said Lawrence in victory lane, "You don't know how forward I'm looking to showing my dad (Cliff Lawrence) this trophy! He won't believe it!"
Lawrence's father, Cliff, is well known in the racing community and is struggling with health issues. Lawrence's win on Friday was a sure fire boost in the arm for both Allan and Cliff.

"I did think this was possible," said Lawrence, "All the work that we did last fall, it just came together and it feels awesome."

Starting on the pole is nothing new to Lawrence. Just a few weeks back he started on the front row of the modified feature, only see the night end early when he made too many changes and dialed himself right out of the event. He made sure this wouldn't happen again tonight.

Scott Crystal jumped out to the early advantage, but Lawrence was working his way to the front and the two would battle closely for a couple of laps. Lawrence would win the battle with Crystal and he never looked back on the way to his first win. It didn't happen without a nervous moment or too.

As the race continued, Lawrence would run into lapped traffic. An area that he hasn't had a lot of work in up to this point. Working his way in and out of the traffic, he came up on a former feature winner this year, Gene Claxton. For a couple of laps Lawrence did not want to come off the bottom line. He ran into the back of Claxton at one point. Claxton, showing the true meaning of being a racer, moved up the track to allow Allan a chance to get by.
Once he got by Claxton, Lawrence sprinted away from Tom Charles and Chad Lyle. Both drivers had closed the gap on Lawrence until he made his way into lapped traffic.

Charles would go on to finish 2nd, while Lyle put on another strong run in the 3rd spot. Lyle's finish on Friday night kept him in the points lead for yet another week at Lakeside. John Allen would finish in the 4th spot and rounding out the top 5 was Cody Owens. Owens continued his success with another top 5 finish. Last week's feature winner in the Modifieds, Kerry Davis, finished in the 6th spot after starting 21st in the A.

Modified heat race winners were; Danny Charles, Tim Karrick, Bobby Layne & Derek Nadler. The B Feature was won by Kerry Davis.

With Lawrence picking up the win, he becomes the 6th different winner out of 6 modified features so far this year. Now that's competition.

The Grand National field set out for another great race on the evening. Nic Bidinger was in search of his 6th win out of 7 races on the season. Did he make it? I would have to say yes.

Just like he has done for most of the season, Bidinger let the race come to him. Bidinger likes to see how the race shakes out before he decides to make his move.
"This car is awesome, I have got a great crew behind me and a lot of good sponsors," said Bidinger.

By virtue of having won the feature the previous week, if you qualify for the feature the next race night, you have to start behind 2nd through 11 from the last week's feature. Basically, it means that Bidinger has usually been starting from the middle of the pack. Tonight was no exception.

Bidinger again used the early laps of the feature to feel out his competition and see where everyone was running. With another bout of steady rain this past week, the track was a little more treacherous than normal. It caused Bidinger to seek out different lines on the race track.

John Snyder moved out to the lead early, Tim Shields looked fast on the speedway and Mike Busby also took some time up at the front of the field. The competition worked hard to hang on to the lead, but it was only time before Bidinger made his way to the front.

Jimmy Winkler had a solid run and finished in the 2nd position, Michael Morse Jr. put together one of his better runs ending up in the 3rd spot, 4th went to David Powell and Marshall Jewett rounded out the top 5.

As fans were leaving Lakeside Speedway, they noticed that several of the Grand Nationals were still in the Tech Area after the completion of the races. The 42T, Tim Shields, was disqualified for having a 368 cubic inch motor.

Three other competitors had their heads confiscated and the results are pending a further test at a local engine builder's shop on Saturday morning.

Grand National heat races were won by; Jeff Smith, Mike Busby and Marshall Jewett.
In the Factory Stock affair it looked as if Marshall Jewett was going to get another Factory Stock win on the season. He didn't get it done and what the fans of Lakeside Speedway were treated to was one for the ages.

Skipping ahead in the story, Jewett was leading Buz Kaster and Michael Taylor as the laps began to wind down on the feature event. Jewett had led most of the way and was on his way to the white flag.

Kaster would be up on the back bumper of Jewett during the last part of the race and on Kaster's back bumper was Michael Taylor. The three would sense the others presence as they all got closer on the track.

Coming to the white flag, Jewett could see the win just off the horizon. Buz Kaster and Michael Taylor had a different ending in mind, but who was going to be able to make the move and hold it for the win. On the white flag lap, Kaster placed his stock car to the inside of Jewett. Taylor made a run on the high side of Kaster looking for momentum. While they sprinted down the back shoot, Kaster knew that if he didn't try something soon it would be too late.

Coming through the middle of turn 3, Kaster stuck his car on the middle groove. He looked for some bite coming out of turn 4. Jewett on the other hand was just out of the groove and pushed up a little exiting turn 4. It was just what Kaster wanted. While his car stuck to the middle of the track, Jewett's car lost its momentum. Michael Taylor made a push on the high side, but had to watch Kaster and Jewett finish just ahead of him.

Racing to the checkered flag it was Kaster by a nose at the wire. Another great finish, in a great class!

Michael Taylor wound up in the 3rd spot, Darrin Christy, put together a good race, finishing 4th and former feature winner, Brett Heeter, rounded out the top 5.
Factory Stock heat races were won by; Jason Ryun, Bobby Ohrenberg, Mike Taylor and Buz Kaster. The B Feature win was taken home by Daniel Stimson.
