Near perfect night at Elmwood Park Speedway
By Mike Hughes

NORTON, KS (May 31)—It was a near perfect night Saturday night, May 31, at Elmwood Park Speedway in Norton, KS, as the caution only waved twice during the evening’s race program.

It was a Thunder Series event for the IMCA Stock Cars, and 12 drivers took the green flag for the 20-lap feature event. Adam Balthazor led the opening lap before being passed by Bryan Lariviere. Lariviere led through lap 7 before being overtaken by ‘The Terminator’ Travis Sherfick of Wakeeney. Sherfick led the remaining distance to score his third win this season at Elmwood Park and his third in the Thunder Series. Lariviere held off Cory Struckhoff for second, with Jay Hachmeister and cash dash winner Terry Cunningham rounding out the top five. Sherfick and J.R. McCreery won the two heat races.

Oberlin’s David Murray Jr. ran away from the field to win the IMCA Modified feature. Murray took the lead from Chad Sterling on lap 2 of the 15-lap race and motored away to the checkers to score his second win of the season at the ½-mile oval and the 398th of his IMCA career. Heat one winner Josh Hudson finished second, followed by heat two victor Sterling, Gary Kline and ‘The Z Man’ Mark Zorn.

Ricky ‘The Racer’ Runnion of Phillipsburg led all 12 laps of the caution free IMCA Hobby Stock feature, his second of the season at Norton. Jeromy Wagner chased Runnion most of the distance but had to settle for second, followed by Kelly Karnopp, heat two winner Jerry Hudson, and Troy Robinson. Michael Thummel and Jason Gross tangled at the finish line but neither driver was injured. Runnion won the other heat race.

Jesse Dunlap of Victoria won the first of two heat races in the 4-cylinder Young Gun division, then led the final 2 laps in the main event to score the win. Heat two winner Dalton Dolan was second, followed by Michael Smith.

Jerry’s Body Shop of Norton was the evenings’ Cash Dash sponsor.

It was Boy Scout/Girl Scout Night at the speedway with all scouts admitted free if in uniform and with a paid adult. The scouts received a race souvenir, helped with the evening’s trophy presentations, and got to ride in a race car during intermission.

The next race at Elmwood Park Speedway in Norton will take place Sunday evening, June 22, at 7:00 p.m. with the regular four divisions in competition. It will also be 4-H Night. All kids wearing their 4-H club t-shirts will be admitted free with a paid adult.
