Johnson cruises to Hays sprint car win
By Mike Hughes

HAYS, KS (June 6)– The United Rebel Sprint Series 305 Sprint Cars made their first appearance of the season at RPM Speedway in Hays, KS, Friday evening, June 6, and Quinter’s C.J. Johnson led all 25 laps of the main event to land in victory lane.

The feature got off to a rough start as Bryan Herbert rolled his car in turn 3 on lap 2. Cory Lutters was also involved. No one was injured but both cars were done for the night. Johnson led the field back to green, and the remaining 23 laps went caution free. C.J. pulled away from the field for the win. C.J.’s father Jon Johnson won the race for second place, followed by Michael Woodruff, Paul Flynn, and Ray Seamen. Heat race winners were Jon Johnson, Taylor Milton, Seamen, and Taylor Valasquez, while Herbert and Justin Schwein were first to the wire in the two B-features.

Joe Cleveland led the first 7 laps of the 20-lap IMCA Modified feature before the first caution flag waved. While under yellow, Cleveland had to pit, giving the lead to Gorham’s Jason Schoenberger. Schoenberger took advantage of the top spot and led the remaining distance to score the win. Danny Morrison finished second, trailed by Jeff Welsh, Matt Fabrizius, and Brian Calhoon. Cleveland, Barry Maupin, Calhoon, and Morrison all won heat races, while Grant Junghans took top honors in the B-main.

A caution filled IMCA Stock Car feature saw track officials cut the race from 20 laps to 15. It didn’t bother Kensington’s Josh Hudson as ‘The Hammer’ led from green to checkered for the victory. Travis ‘The Terminator’ Sherfick worked his way up to finish in the runner-up spot, followed by Terry Cunningham, Adam Balthazor, and Tracy Holloway. Hudson and Cunningham were victors in the two heat races.

Marquette’s B.J. Dauer followed up his heat race win with his second feature win of the season at the 3/8-mile oval in the IMCA Hobby Stock class. After three green flag starts that failed, the field started the race single file and Dauer led all 15 laps to the checkers. Joey Carter, heat one winner Jerry Hudson, Roger Garrison, and Mathew Crowell rounded out the top five.

It was Family Night at the speedway, and the evening’s race sponsor was Nex-Tech, Nex-Tech Wireless, and Golden Belt Telephone.

Racing action returns to RPM Speedway Friday, July 4, with the regular four classes in competiton. Past and present servicemen and women will be honored and allowed free in the grandstand if in uniform and with a military ID. Those with Wild West tickets will also be admitted for half price.
