Lawrence Hangs On By A Door For 2nd Modified Win Of '08, Busby Gains 1st Grand National Feature Win & Jason Ryun Becomes Repeat Factory Stock Winner
by: Larry Lowrey

KANSAS CITY, KS (June 6) - There have been many 'one-hit' wonders in this world. A few of them even come to mind every now and then. Ice, Ice Baby by Vanilla Ice, Disco Duck by some guy and Lakeside Modified Feature Win by Allan Lawrence. Wait a minute. After Friday night Allan Lawrence isn't a 'one-hit' wonder.

"The win feels really good, but tonight I feel like I should have won," said Lawrence in victory lane, "... the track was good and I started on the pole, I needed this one bad to back up the other one (his first win)."
It didn't come as easy as he would have liked. Lawrence led for the entire feature, but it wasn't just taking the green and getting the checkers right after. There were some tense moments that came about.

John Allen was one of the first things to test Lawrence's will to win. Allen shot to the 2nd spot and gave a hard chase to run down the leader. Allen would jump the cushion going into turn 1 and brushed up against the wall. This would cause him to lose some spots and the ground that he gained toward the leader, but Allan would battle back and be a thorn in Lawrence's side.

Another thing that caused Lawrence to worry was the mounts to hold his driver door on came free at the bottom and it began to fold up toward the the window of the car. The question was now, 'will it hold?'

"I thought it was going to come off," said Lawrence, "When you are out in front and winning you start thinking about the worst things that could happen."

If the door would have come off, it would have sent Lawrence to the tail end of the line and most certainly would have taken the win away.

As Lawrence took the white flag, a pileup occurred in turn 1. Jeff Soligo had lost some sheet metal going into 1 and this time he brushed up against the wall. This move collected several cars trying to get by. It made for a green, white and checkered finish. Lawrence had to hold his breath again. This time he wouldn't have to worry about Allen. He was caught up in the wall and would have to be towed in on the hook. A bad break for Allen who was contending for the win.

On the restart, Lawrence had to worry about another competitor, Tim Karrick. Karrick had made his way to the front and was looking fast on the speedway. Karrick already has 1 win to his credit this year.

As the green flag dropped again it didn't take long for the yellow to come back out. Several cars were spread out across the front straight. Again another yellow, Lawrence would have to do it again.

The green flag would fly for the last time and Lawrence held of a hard charging Tim Karrick for his 2nd win of the season.

Mike Busby is a driver who is in his 2nd year at Lakeside Speedway in the Grand National Division. Busby is a driver that looks fast and is fast when you watch him on the race track. Most of the fans at Lakeside knew it was only time until Busby would put together his first win.

Busby inherited the lead when Mike Taylor pulled off the track due to mechanical problems. Racing in the lead position wasn't a good place to be a Lakeside tonight. Ben Kyle was in the lead and something happened to his car that gave the lead to Taylor and then on to Busby.

"It feels real good, it's amazing," said a happy Busby in the winner's circle, "I owe it all to my crew. My step-dad Jim, Brian, Kyle and most definitely Yancy (Sheppard) after this week."

After coming close in previous races, Busby was not about to let this one get away from him.

"I saw the temperature gauge get up to 250 (degrees)," said Busby, "but I wasn't going to get out of it!"

Busby now becomes the 3rd different winner in the Grand National division. The points leader, Nic Bidinger, gave Busby a good race, but nothing was denying Busby his first feature win tonight.

Bidinger came home 2nd on the night, but wondered if he could have had more for Busby. Chatting with Bidinger after the race, he has become worried about issues with his car and if he can get them rectified or not.

Darren Kling put another strong run together to finish in the 3rd spot, rookie, Tim Shields, came home with a respectable 4th place finish and rounding out the top 5 was David Powell.

The Factory Stock feature seemed to be looking in the favor of Darrin Christy. Christy has been a long time racer in the Factory Stock division at Lakeside and he has tasted victory. He was on his way, until his motor let go. A sight that looked good to some racers, but bad for Christy, who had built up a straightaway lead on the field.

Jason Ryun didn't mind. He was able to work his way up and take over the lead as Christy dropped out. Ryun put his hot rod out front and didn't look back. Mike Taylor would make some advances, but once Ryun got to the open he was gone.

`Starting 9th row in the feature, we knew that was a long way to come," said Ryun, "We have had damage last week, we broke an axle, I just wanted to get into the top 10. I saw the 3B up there and started to smoke and blow up, I was sorry for him, but I was glad to see it."

Cars jockeyed for positions all over the track.

Taylor would go on to snag 2nd, 3rd would go to Don Chaffin, last week's winner, Terry Schmidt, finished in the 4th position and finishing 5th was Cliff Hedges Jr.

Buzz Kaster, the Factory Stock points leader, suffered a set back and had to settle for a 25th place finish. Terry Schmidt took over the points lead after tonight's race.

Next week the staff at Lakeside Speedway will be ready to go again, for the 'Salute to Flag Day' races. The O'Reilly MLRA will be on the docket along with the Modifieds. Gates open at 5 pm., hot laps are at 7 pm. and the races go green at 7:30 pm.
