Sprint Cars invade Wakeeney Speedway
By Mike Hughes

WAKEENEY, KS (June 8) — The O’Reilley NCRA 360 Sprint Car Series presented by ICM Ethanol made an appearance at Wakeeney (KS) Speedway Sunday evening, June 8, for Steve King Foundation Night.

Veteran Mike Peters won the sprint car main event, which saw a bizarre finish. Heat 3 winner J.D. Johnson took advantage of his pole starting position to jump to an early lead, followed by Peters, heat race winners Luke Cranston and Mike Chadd, and C.J. Johnson.
Johnson encountered lapped traffic on lap 7 and was able to put a couple of cars between himself and his pursuers. The first caution flag waved on lap 14 when Mark Walinder coasted to a stop at the end of the front straightaway. On the restart, Larry Neighbors spun in turn 4, sending most of the field scattering, and putting Cody Forshee upside down.
Forshee was okay but done for the night, as was Neighbors. Then on lap 22 as leader J.D. Johnson encountered lapped traffic again, he made contact with a lapped car, and was sent spinning down the frontstraight. Johnson then had to tag the field at the back of the line on the restart, giving Peters the lead, followed by C.J. Johnson, Cranston, Chadd, and Derek Drown. But with 2 laps to go, Ryan Kitchen flipped in turn 4, bringing out another red flag. Kitchen was uninjured, but during the red flag period, rain began to fall, forcing track officials to call the race. Peters was awarded the win, followed by C.J. Johnson, Chadd, Cranston, and Drown. Don Droud Jr. was victorious in the B-feature.

Mark ‘The Z Man’ Zorn of Russell won the caution free 20-lap IMCA Modified feature, but Ronnie Hill made him work hard for it. Jeff Tubbs took the lead at the drop of the green but was overtaken by Zorn on lap 4. By the halfway point in the race, Hill was hot on Zorn’s heels and stayed glued to his back bumper the rest of the distance. Hill attempted to pass on several occasions but never could clear Zorn enough to get the lead. At the finish, Zorn beat out Hill by about 2 feet for the win. Randy Wilson finished third, followed by Jeremy Zorn and Nick Tubbs. Heat race winners were Mark Zorn, Tyler Hahn, Marty Clark, and Hill. Jason Schoenberger won the B-feature.

Kensington’s Josh ‘The Hammer’ Hudson from green to checkered in the 20-lap IMCA Stock Car feature, which also ran caution free. Terry Cunningham won the race for the runner-up spot, edging out Adam Balthazor, Ryan Wark and Cory Struckhoff. Dan Lauer and Hudson were both victorious in the two heat races.

Marquette’s B.J. Dauer kept his winning streak intact at Wakeeney Speedway and capped off a perfect weekend with a feature win in the IMCA Hobby Stock division. Travis Glassman led the opening lap of the 15-lap race before Kirk Karst took over the helm. But Dauer motored to the front on lap 5 and led the rest of the way to score his third win in as many races at Wakeeney this season. It was also his third on the weekend after claiming wins at RPM Speedway in Hays on Friday, and Minneapolis Raceway on Saturday. Karst finished in the runner-up spot, followed by Joey Carter, Travis Glassman and Josh Latka. Glassman and Dauer earned wins in their respective heat races.

Alfred Emmons of Russell and Kenny Cain of Lucas took the lead on lap 2 from Justin Noga to score their second Cruno main event win of the season at the 3/8-mile oval. Alex West finished second and Adam Cofer was third. Heat race winners were Dalton Bauer and Emmons & Cain.

Pro Auto Glass of Wakeeney was the evening’s race sponsor, and Toys 4 Trux in Hays helped sponsor the sprint car division.

Racing returns to Wakeeney Speedway on Sunday, June 29. The regular four divisions will heat it up starting at 6:00 p.m.
