Repeat winners at Wakeeney Speedway
By Mike Hughes

WAKEENEY, KS (June 29) - Some familiar faces found their way to victory lane at Wakeeney (KS) Speedway Sunday evening, June 29.

Kensington’s Cory Struckhoff won his third IMCA Stock Car feature in 4 events at the 3/8-mile oval this season, but it did not come easy. After the first two green flag starts failed, the field lined up single file for the third restart. After the green flag dropped, all 20 laps went caution free. The first couple of laps saw the leaders go 4-wide part of the distance. Jay Hachmeister led the first 2 laps before heat one victor Terry Cunningham took command. Struckhoff made his charge to the front on lap 5 and stayed there the rest of the distance. Teammate Josh ‘The Hammer’ Hudson and Cunningham gave chase but had to settle for second and third. Hachmeister and heat two winner Travis Sherfick rounded out the top five.

After winning his 100th career IMCA feature the night before at Minneapolis Raceway, B.J. Dauer of Marquette kept his winning streak intact at Wakeeney, winning his fourth IMCA Hobby Stock main event of the season. Brett Glassman led the first 8 laps before Dauer took over the top spot at the halfway mark of the 15-lap event. Four caution flags kept the field close, but Dauer was able to hold on out front. Glassman was second, followed by Jerry Hudson, Ricky Runnion and Kirk Karst. Heat race winners were Glassman and Dauer.

A new face did appear in the winner’s circle in the IMCA Modified division as ‘The Wichita Lineman’ Randy Wilson was the fourth different driver in four races to claim the checkers. Hometown driver John Fose led the first 11 laps of the 20-lap race before Wilson got under Fose in turn 3 on lap 12 to take a lead he would not relinquish. Fose gave chase but had to settle for the runner-up spot in the caution free event. Rounding out the top five were Barry Maupin, Corey Lagroon and Jason Schoenberger. Marty Clark, Lagroon, Wilson, and Jeremy Zorn all won heat races, while Ronnie Hill was first to the flagstand in the B-feature.

Alfred Emmons of Russell and Kenny Cain of Lucas took the lead on lap 4 from Adam Cofer to score their third Cruno main event at the 3/8-mile oval. Cofer finished second with heat race winner Dalton Bauer third.

The evening’s race sponsors were Hot Rods of Oakley and Mittens of Oakley.

Racing returns to Wakeeney Speedway during the Trego County Fair on Monday, July 21, at 7:00 p.m. The regular four divisions will be joined by the United Rebel Sprint Series 305 Sprint Cars.
