Wettengel Nails Two Track Championships, Bowers Jr. & Sr. Double Up, Covert Wins Factory Stock Feature & Hilton Gets 1st Hobby Win

TOPEKA, KS (Sept 7) - Funny things happen on a points championship night at race tracks all across America. Heartland Park Topeka shouldn't be any different, or should it? Sunday night was the final night of the Wast Management, Think Green Dirt Series Points Championship and it was exciting from start to finish.

Shane Wettengel has tasted success at HPT probably more than any other driver since re-opening back in 2006. Wettengel has held a championship for the last two season and now he can add two more in 2008. On Sunday night he picked up the crowns in the Hobby Stock and Factory Stock division. He didn't even have to win either feature to get the job done.

In the Hobby Stock Feature, Shane Hilton pulled off his first win of the 2008 season. What a great night to get it on too, the last night.

Rod Michael and Tim Patch started the race on the front row. Patch would lead the start of the race. It wouldn't be long before Hilton would pressure Patch for that lead spot.

Hilton would get by Patch, but he didn't run off and leave him either. Patch gave a solid effort to run down Hilton, but couldn't get it done.

Rod Michael finished 3rd, the points champ for 2008, Shane Wettengel, was 4th and finishing 5th was Kyle Covert.
This was the 1st championship for Wettengel on the night.

Heading into the Factory Stock main event, Wettengel and Kyle Covert, last year's track champion, were racing 1st and 2nd in points all year long.

Kyle Covert showed his strength on Sunday night by winning in a landslide on the final night of the season. For most of the feature he carrried a large margin on the 2nd place car.

Covert also did what he had to do to catch Wettengel, he won. Unfortunately, it wasn't by a large enough margin. Wettengel would win the Factory Stock Crown by 4 points.

Gerald Wahwahsuck made a strong run to the front. He started 7th in the feature and wound up just behind Covert. Eric Weyer finished 3rd, Greg Deters was 4th and rounding out the top 5 was Josh Henery.

In 2008, the B Mod class saw it's first action at HPT. It was filled with a lot of excitement and enthusiasim. The final night of racing saw 29 B Mods check in for action.

It was one that most would like to forget on the final night, escpecially Brian Murphy. Murphy came into the night with a slight lead over DJ Demotte. A spin early in the race, while driving in the top 5 took Murphy out of the race with severe damage. DJ DeMotte would roll to his first track championship.

The feature event was shortened, due to several yellow flags and attempts to start the race. When the checkers finally came down on the speedway, Steven Bowers Sr. took the top honors. It was his first win at Heartland Park in 2008.
DeMotte came in 2nd, Ray Maloney finished 3rd, 4th went to a hard charging Scotty Martin and Brent Alverson picked off a fifth place finish.

The only points championship that was decided before the night started had to be the Modified class. Steven Bowers Jr. came in with a large advantage over the rest of the field. He had it locked up from the time he showed up at the track. What could he do for an encore? How about win another feature?

Bowers Jr. followed in his father's footsteps with a win of his own. It wasn't an easy win. He fell back and then had to work his way back up through the competition. When he finally made his way to the front he had to move past Tom Charles to get the lead.

The two went back and forth, before Bowers would take the advantage. Once at the point he wouldn't look back.
Jack Richards would make his way by Tom Charles and they battled to the bitter end with Richards taking 2nd, while Charles finished 3rd. Justin Boney had the drive of the night in the Modified feature. Boney started in 19th and marched his way up to 4th before stalling out and finishing there. Kyle Stallbaumer celebrated a strong run and finished 5th.
Tonight's races capped off the 2008 Wast Management 'Think Green' Dirt Series' races for the season.

Next up will be the World of Outlaw Sprint Car Series next Saturday night, Sept. 13.
