TERRY PHILLIPS TAKES LATE MODEL SHOOTOUT NIGHT TWO WIN AT LAKESIDE SPEEDWAY
WDRL points battle tightens up

KANSAS CITY, KS (Sept. 27, 2008) -- Terry Phillips took the win on Night Two of the Late Model Shootout Saturday night here at Lakeside Speedway. The event was co-sanctioned by the WORLD Dirt Racing League and the O'Reilly MLRA Series.

As a result of the weekend racing action, the WDRL points battle tightened between John Kaanta and Chad Simpson. The top two are separated by a single point with only one night points racing, during a two-night show, left on the 2008 schedule.

Phillips, of Springfield, Mo., started 16th in the $5,000-to-win feature event Saturday. He worked the low side of the speedway and made his way toward the front. He caught race leader Alan Vaughn and battled through lapped traffic with him. The two swapped the lead a few times before Phillips would come out on top and repeat as the winner of the Saturday version of the Late Model Shootout at Lakeside Speedway.

Chad Simpson of Mt. Vernon, Iowa, rolled out of staging in the seventh starting spot and found himself racing in the back half of the top 10 through the early portion of the feature. As the race wound down, Simpson was moving toward the front.

Working the high side to perfection, he was able to move up to second place. But the race ended before Simpson was able to track down the leader for a showdown.

Vaughn, of Belton, Mo., ran in the top five all night. Vaughn worked past early race leader Frank Heckenast Jr., Orland Park, Ill., but was passed by eventual race winner Phillips. With Simpson also getting by in the closing laps, Vaughn held on for third.

John Anderson of Omaha, Neb., spent most of his 50 laps in heavy traffic just outside the top five. He finally worked his way through the pack of cars to post a fourth-place finish.

WORLD Dirt Racing League points leader John Kaanta of Elk Mound, Wis., came from an 11th-place start Saturday to a fifth-place finish. Friday night's winner, Denny Woodworth of Mendon, Ill., was sixth Saturday.

Leaving Lakeside, Kaanta holds on to a one-point lead over Chad Simpson. The 2008 series champion will be determined during the $10,000 Iowa Governor's Cup race Friday and Saturday, Oct. 3 and 4, at Davenport (Iowa) Speedway.

Friday night will feature Iowa-Illinois Taylor Insulation Group Qualifying, CrashedToys.com Heat Races and the IITI Pole Dash.

On Saturday night, racing fans will view the last-chance races and the 60-Lap Governor's Cup feature event.
