Murray picks up $1,000 at Wakeeney Speedway

By Mike Hughes

WAKEENEY, KS (August 2) - The Trego County Fair featured races at the Wakeeney (KS) Speedway Monday evening, August 2, with added prize money to all four regular divisions.

The biggest paycheck of the night went to David Murray Jr. of Oberlin who dominated the IMCA Modified feature.  Murray started on the pole of the 20-lap race and left the field to win his second feature of the season at the 3/8-mile oval.  The lone caution flag waved on lap 16 when Dylan Sherfick slowed, but on the restart with 5 laps to go, Murray again pulled away to collect a $1,000 paycheck.  ‘The Minneapolis Missle’ Dave Hardesty chased Murray the entire distance, but could not get close enough to mount a serious challenge and settled for second.  Corey Lagroon, Jason Schoenberger and Jeremy Frenier rounded out the top five.  Heat race winners were Murray, Jeremy Zorn, Schoenberger and ‘Rapid’ Ronnie Hill.  ‘Gentleman’ Jerry Phillips and ‘The Z Man’ Mark Zorn were first to the checkers in the two B-features.

After winning the heat race, Stockton’s Adam Balthazor led all 15 caution free laps in the IMCA Stock Car feature, his first of the season at Wakeeney.  Balthazor was alone at the checkers, but the race for the runner-up spot saw Terry Cunningham beat Jay Hachmeister and Rod Bencken to the line.  Pat Bedore completed the top five.

Hoxie’s Chris Heim also led green to checkered to score his second Wakeeney win of the year in the IMCA Northern Sport Mod main event.  Heat one winner Clayton Wilson chased him most of the 15-lap distance but had to settle for second, trailed by second heat victor Brian Conness, Blaine Walt and Tanner Portenier.

The wildest finish of the night came in the IMCA Hobby Stock feature.  Salina’s Austin Carter took the lead at the drop of the green, followed closely by Josh Latka, G.W. ‘Cheeseburger’ Fuller and heat one winner Kirk Karst.  At the halfway mark in the 15-lap event, Carter continued to lead, trailed by Latka, Karst, Michael Schamberger and Daniel Irwin.  Carter appeared to be on his way to his first feature win, but as the tight lead pack came out of turn 2 on the final lap, Latka made contact with Carter, who spun on the backside of the track, as did Karst.  The caution flag did not wave though and the field raced to the checkers with Latka taking the win, followed by Schamberger, Irwin, Casey Gilmore and Cody Graham.  But track officials penalized Latka 2 positions for the contact, giving Hoxie’s Schamberger his second win of the season at Wakeeney.  Carter won the other heat race.

The evening’s race sponsors were 1st Federal Savings & Loan of Wakeeney, and Billinger-Brungardt Farms, your certified seed wheat dealer in Wakeeney.

The next race at Wakeeney will be a make-up race on Friday, August 13.  All 4 regular divisions return to action, along with the URSS 305 Sprint Cars.  Race time is 7:30 p.m.
