Gearhart, Normandin, Carter first time winners at Hays
By Mike Hughes

HAYS, KS (August 6) - RPM Speedway in Hays, KS, returned to action on Friday evening, August 6, with all 5 IMCA divisions in action. It was also the Race cars for Superstars event to benefit Big Brothers/Big Sisters in a five county area.

Shannon Maughlin took the lead at the drop of the green in the 20-lap Teels Trucks IMCA Modified feature. Maughlin led the field to the halfway mark, but on the following lap, Cody Gearhart of Turpin, OK, drove around Maughlin to take over the lead and hold on to the checkers for his first win of the season at Hays. Jeremy Zorn finished in the runner-up spot, followed by heat one winner Dave Hardesty, heat two victor Maughlin, and Kyle Rohleder. Marty Clark also won a heat race, while Troy Plummer took top honors in the 11-car B-feature.

Salina’s Mark Normandin also picked up his first win at RPM Speedway this season as he led all 15 laps in the Lock N Load IMCA Hobby Stock feature. The race was filled with action as several drivers battled for several positions throughout the race. The final caution waved for a spinning Cory Ukele on lap 14, setting up a green-white-checkered finish. Normandin held off several determined drivers to make his way to victory lane. Luke Pfannenstiel, G.W. Fuller, Cody Graham and Kent Tammen rounded out the top five. Heat race winners were Daniel Irwin and Normandin.

Shianne Carter, also of Salina, echoed Normandin’s feat as she led from green to checkered in the 12-lap Steel Fabrications IMCA Sport Compact main event. The caution flag only waved twice, but heat one winner Carter was up to the challenge to visit victory lane at Hays for the first time in 2010. Monte Honas chased Carter most of the race but settled for second, followed by Monroe Schmidt, Tim Augustine, and heat two winner Shaun Woods.

Wakeeney’s Clayton Wilson continued his domination in the Prater Oil Field Services IMCA Northern Sport Mod division. After winning the first heat race, Wilson started ninth in the 10-car field, and only needed four laps in the 15-lap feature to take the lead. Tyler Bradshaw led the first 3 laps before the lone caution waved when second heat winner Kaid Calhoon stopped on the track. While under caution, leader Bradshaw went to the pits and did not return, giving Blaine Walt the lead when the green flag reappeared. But on the following lap, Wilson drove by Walt down the backstretch to take a lead he would not relinquish. Walt finished second, with Joe Couse, Mathew Crowell and Chris Heim completing the top five. Wilson has 5 wins this season at RPM Speedway, the most by any driver at the 3/8-mile oval.

Jay Schmidt led the first two circuits in the Adronics Elrob Manufacturing IMCA Stock Car feature before heat one winner Pat Bedore took control. But Bedore’s lead was short-lived as he came to a stop on lap 5, bringing out a caution and giving Wakeeney’s Terry Cunningham the lead. Cunningham took advantage and drove away for his second win this year at Hays. Heat two winner Adam Balthazor, national point leader Mike Nichols of Harlan, IA, Casey Werkmeister and Schmidt rounded out the top five.

Thirteen would-be drivers tested their skills in the Race Cars & Superstars event, and a familiar face set fast time as Stockton’s Greg Beougher was the quickest around the track. Bill Wynn of Wakeeney raised the most money individually, collecting over $11,000, while all 13 drivers raised over $37,000 for the five county area for Big Brothers/Big Sisters.

Racing action returns to RPM Speedway on Friday, August 20. The United Rebel Sprint Series 305 Sprint Cars will make their final appearance of the season at RPM Speedway, and will be joined by the IMCA-sanctioned Modifieds, Stock Cars and Sport Compacts. The green flag waves at 7:30 p.m.
