RPM Speedway opens 2011 season
By Mike Hughes

HAYS, KS (April 22, 2011) - Close to 90 race teams checked in for racing action at RPM Speedway in Hays, KS, Friday, April 22, for the 2011 season opener.  The opener was scheduled for Friday, April 15, but was pushed back a week due to inclement weather.

In the Teel’s Trucks IMCA Modified main event, Russell’s Marty Clark took advantage of his pole starting position to take the early lead, trailed by Travis Sherfick, Jerry Phillips and Dominic Ursetta.  The lone caution in the race came on lap 7 when Josh Appel spun.  Clark led the field back to green, but on lap 8, Ursetta, of Arvada, CO, took over the top spot and held on for the win.  Cody Gearhart got by Clark for second, with Corey Lagroon and Tyler Iverson rounding out the top five.  Heat race winners were Shannon Maughlin, ‘Rapid’ Ronnie Hill, and Lagroon.

Gorham’s Jason Schoenberger continued his stronghold on the Advantage Glass Plus IMCA Stock Car division.  Schoenberger, who has won both stock car features at nearby Wakeeney Speedway this season, passed leader Terry Cunningham in turn 3 coming to the crossed flags and held on the last half of the 20-lap race to score the win.  Cunningham held on for second, followed by Adam Balthazor, Bruce Plumisto and Dustin Newlin.  The race got off to a rough start as 5 cars tangled in turn 2 on the opening lap, with Jay Hachmeister rolling over.  However Hachmeister was able to drive the car away but was done for the night, as was heat two winner Pat Bedore.  Terry Franz won the other heat race.

The Golden Plains Trucking IMCA Northern Sport Mod feature was caution plagued and saw several lead changes in the 15-lap event.  Jason Nelssen took the lead at the drop of the green, only to be passed by Wichita’s Bryan Lariviere on the following lap.  Lariviere continued to lead at the halfway mark, but Chris Heim passed Lariviere on lap 9 after a restart for debris on the race track.  Lariviere returned the favor though after a restart on lap 10 and was able to fend off several challengers the remaining distance for his trip to victory lane.  Jake Krone, Tyler Sutton, Heim, and Nelssen completed the top five.  Heat race victors were Clayton Wilson, Lariviere, and Krone.

‘Leadfoot’ Luke Pfannenstiel of Hays led all 15 laps to claim the checkers in the Lock n Load IMCA Hobby Stock feature.  Kent Tammen stayed close the entire race but could not make the pass.  G.W. ‘Cheeseburger’ Fuller passed Tammen late in the race to finish in the runner-up spot.  Cody Graham and Mark Normandin finished fourth and fifth.  Pfannenstiel and Tammen were heat race winners.

Heat one winner Monte Honas led the first half of the Steel Fabrications IMCA Sport Compact feature before Victoria’s Dave Juenemann made the winning pass on lap 7 of the 12-lap event.  Honas finished second, followed by Vincent Jasper, Jesse Dunlap, Dean Herzog and heat two winner Allen Rice.

The evening’s race sponsor was Caerus Oil & Gas LLC of Denver, CO, and the Easter Bunny was on hand to hand out Easter eggs to the kids.

All 5 regular divisions return to the 3/8-mile oval on Friday, April 29.  It will be Merchants Night.  The green flag flies at 7:30 p.m.
