Schoenberger threepeats at Wakeeney
By Mike Hughes

WAKEENEY, KS (April 24)—Gorham’s Jason Schoenberger made it a threepeat in the IMCA Stock Car division at Wakeeney (KS) Speedway Sunday evening, April 24, winning his third main event in a row in that division.

Mike Wadel led the opening lap of the stock car feature, only to be passed by ‘Sweet’ Wheat Lippelmann on lap 2.  Two laps later, Colorado’s Jesse Taylor took over the top spot.  A scary moment occurred on lap 5 when Wadel and Terry Cunningham made contact coming out of turn 4, with Cunningham rolling hard down the front straightaway.  Cunningham was okay but done for the evening, as was Wadel.  Taylor led the field back to the Crawford Supply Co. flagstand, before 9th starting Schoenberger made the winning pass on lap 8.  Bruce Plumisto charged his way through the field to finish second, followed by Taylor, Jay Hachmeister, and Lippelmann.  Jeff Tubbs and Lippelmann won the two heat races.

‘Leadfoot’ Luke Pfannenstiel of Hays won his second IMCA Hobby Stock feature in a row at the 3/8-mile oval.  Tyrel Smith led the opening lap of the 15-lap caution plagued event, and through several caution periods, continued to lead through lap 13.  But coming to the white flag, Pfannenstiel and Garrett Hager both passed Smith and finished 1-2 at the checkers.  Smith finished third, followed by Cody Ghumm and Jerry Hudson.  Heat race winners were Pfannenstiel, G.W. ‘Cheeseburger’ Fuller, and Ghumm.

The 15-lap IMCA Northern Sport Mod feature also saw the caution flag wave on several occasions.  Willie Wynn jumped to the early lead from his outside pole starting spot, but Wichita’s Bryan Lariviere took command on lap 2 and led the remaining distance.  Clayton Wilson gave chase but could not reel in Lariviere and settled for the runner-up spot, trailed by Colton Osborn, Chris Heim and Clay Sellard.  Heat race victors were Brian Conness, Lariviere, and Justin Dietz.

Schoenberger, Pfannenstiel and Lariviere won their second feature of the weekend in their respective divisions as all 3 drivers also won on Friday night at RPM Speedway in Hays.

Heat 3 winner Scott Brown led the first lap of the IMCA Modified 20-lap feature before hometown driver John Fose took the lead.  Fose was pulling away, but lost fuel pressure coming out of turn 4 on lap 5 and spun out.  ‘Dynamite’ Dylan Sherfick led the field back to green, followed by Shannon Maughlin and heat one winner Jeremy Frenier of Fort Morgan, CO.  Sherfick led at the halfway mark, but was passed on the following lap by Frenier.  Jeremy led the remaining distance to make his way to the Jason Oil Co. winner’s circle.  Jason Schoenberger charged through the field to finish second, with Maughlin, Corey Lagroon, and Nate Moore rounding out the top five.  Jerry Phillips also won a heat race.

Billinger & Brungardt Farms of Wakeeney was the evening’s race sponsor.  There was also an Easter egg hunt for the kids.

The next race is on Sunday, May 1, at 6:00 p.m. with the regular four divisions in action.  It will be Boy Scout/Girl Scout Night.  Any scout wearing any part of their uniform will be admitted free with a paid adult.
