Schoenberger, Juenemann make it two in a row at Hays
By Mike Hughes

HAYS, KS (April 29)—Jason Schoenberger of Gorham and Victoria’s Dave Juenemann made it two wins in a row in their respective divisions in racing action at RPM Speedway in Hays, KS, on Friday evening, April 29.

In the Advantage Glass Plus IMCA Stock Car feature, Schoenberger took over the lead from front row starter Pat Bedore on lap 4.  The lone caution came on lap 6 when Austin Carter spun, with Schoenberger leading the field back to green, trailed by Bedore, Jason Rogers and Terry Franz.  Schoenberger held on for the win, followed by Rogers, Franz, Bedore, and Josh Crombie.  Heat race winners were Bedore and Schoenberger.

The first lap of the Steel Fabrications IMCA Sport Compact feature saw Art Herzog and Kirk Pfannenstiel tangle, eliminating both cars.  On the restart, defending track champion Jesse Dunlap took the top spot, followed by Allen Rice and Dave Juenemann, but Juenemann took a lead he would not relinquish on lap 4.  The final half of the 12-lap race saw two caution periods keep the field close but Juenemann held on for his second win of the season at RPM Speedway.  Heat two winner Rice finished second, with Wayne Juenemann, Matthew Jermark and Josh Latka rounding out the top five.  Trever Schmidt won the other heat race.

The Teels Trucks IMCA Modified feature had a wild finish.  Rodger Peck took the lead on the opening circuit of the 20-lap race, followed by Dylan Sherfick, Ronnie Hill and Jason Schoenberger.  But ‘Dynamite’ Dylan took over the top spot on lap 7 and led the field past the halfway mark.  Then on lap 12, Cody Gearhart of Turpin, OK, bested a 3-wide battle with Sherfick and Geoff Jermark to take control.  Jermark took over the lead on lap 18, but Gearhart regained the top spot coming to the white flag and held on to the checkers to make his way to the winner’s circle.  Jermark settled for second, ahead of Jerry Phillips, Sherfick, and Kyle Rohleder.  Peck, John Fose, and Dylan Sherfick were victorious in the three heat races.

Blaine Walt took advantage of his pole starting position in the 15-lap Golden Plains Trucking IMCA Northern Sport Mod feature to take the early lead, followed by Clayton Wilson and Belleville’s Tyler Frye.  Walt led all the way through lap 11 until he got stuck behind a lapped car, allowing Bryan Lariviere and Frye both to get by.  Lariviere’s lead was short-lived however as Frye took the lead on lap 13 and held on to make a visit to victory lane.  Lariviere, Walt, Wilson, and Josh Rice completed the top five.  Heat race victors were Walt, Wilson and Frye.

Cody Ghumm led the first 5 laps of the Lock N Load IMCA Hobby Stock main event, then was passed by veteran Jerry Hudson on lap 6.  But one lap later, G.W. ‘Cheeseburger’ Fuller took the lead and drove away for the win.  Hudson was second, followed by Cody Graham, Mike Traskowsky and Garrett Hager.  Fuller and Hudson were heat race winners.

It was Merchants Night with several area businesses sponsoring the evening’s race program.  Pepsi also had several giveaways.

All 5 regular divisions return to the 3/8-mile oval on Friday, May 13.  It will be School Spirit Night, with everyone 18 & under admitted free if wearing their school shirt.  There will also be several bicycles given away.  The green flag flies at 7:30 p.m.
