Familiar faces in victory lane at RPM Speedway
By Mike Hughes

HAYS, KS (June 17) - All five feature winners at RPM Speedway in Hays, KS, Friday evening, June 17, were familiar to race fans as all had made an appearance in victory lane at the 3/8-mile oval earlier this season.

The Blood, Sweat and Tears Modified tour made a stop Friday night, and ‘Racin’ Jason Schoenberger of Gorham became the first repeat winner in the Teels Trucks IMCA Modified division.  Outside polesitter Dominic Ursetta took the early lead in the 25-lap main event before Will Brack took over the top spot.  Brack continued to lead at the halfway mark of the race, but Schoenberger finally got by Brack on lap 16 and was able to hold off Brack in lapped traffic for his second modified win of the season at Hays.  Ursetta finished third, followed by Ryan Gaylord and Marty Clark.  Heat race winners were Eddie Belec, Shannon Maughlin, and Ursetta.

Schoenberger hit the daily double as he also won the Advantage Glass Plus IMCA Stock Car feature, his fourth this season at RPM Speedway.  Marty Barth led the first 10 laps in the 20-lap caution free race before Schoenberger drove by Barth down the backstraight on lap 12.  Schoenberger drove on for the win, with Terry Cunningham, Barth, Ryan Wark and Jay Schmidt rounding out the top five.  Bruce Plumisto and Schoenberger were victorious in the two heat races, and Schoenberger took the money in the Oldham Sales cash dash.

The Golden Plains Trucking IMCA Sport Mod feature was caution filled and saw only 7 cars finish the 15-lap event that saw 13 starters.  Joe Couse led the opening lap, then sixth starting Clayton Wilson made a charge to the front.  But Couse regained the lead on lap 5 and continued to lead until ‘Flyin’ Brian Lariviere got by Couse down the backstretch enroute to the crossed flags at the halfway point.  Lariviere was able to hold on through numerous cautions the latter half of the race for his 5th victory this season at Hays.  Kaid Calhoon finished in the runner-up spot, trailed by Blaine Walt, Wilson, and Mike Appel.  Heat race victors were Couse and Chris Heim.

Wakeeney’s Cody Ghumm won his third Lock N Load IMCA Hobby Stock feature at RPM Speedway.  Ghumm led all 15 laps to make his way to the winner’s circle.  Kent Tammen, Tony Slothower, Luke Pfannenstiel and Daniel Irwin completed the top five.  Ghumm and Slothower were heat race winners.

The Steel Fabrications IMCA Sport Compact feature saw point leader Dave Juenemann of Victoria pass heat one winner Trever Schmidt on lap 8 of the 12-lap event and drive on for his third trip to victory lane this season.  Schmidt held on for second, followed by Tristen Barton, Jesse Dunlap and Michael Copper.  Monte Honas won the other heat race.

It was ‘Tough Enough to Wear Pink/A Race 2 a Cure Night.’  Race sponsors were Polymer Service of Plainville, and Vernie’s Trux & Equipment/Toys 4 Trux of Hays.

The five regular divisions return to action on Friday, July 1, for ‘Christmas in July.’  Race fans can bring a new $5.00 toy and get $5.00 off their ticket price, or kids can bring a new $5.00 toy and be admitted free.  The toys will go toward area angel tree programs.  Race time will be 7:30 p.m.
