Landis takes Friday non-qualifiers' show at the Knoxville Nationals
By Stacy Ervin

KNOXVILLE, IA (Aug. 11, 2006) - Arizona native Calvin Landis, who became a Knoxville transplant to run weekly at the Knoxville Raceway several years ago, nearly retired from racing at the end of last season due to lack of funding.

But friends and family scraped together enough to keep him going and on Friday, August 11, Landis took home the $5,000 win in the non-qualifiers' main
event at the 46th annual Knoxville Nationals presented by Super Clean, Midwest Ford Dealers and Northland Oil.

Starting on the pole of the 20-lap race, Landis fended off a brief challenge from fellow front-row starter Lynton Jeffrey.

As the race went green, the red flag quickly came out when Matt Moro jumped the cushion in turn one and flipped into turn two. When the race started a
second time, the restart was called back because flagman Doug Clark felt Landis and Jeffrey did not stay together.

The next attempt at a start was better and Landis took off with the lead. By lap six, Landis had hit lapped traffic as Jerrod Hull was pulling to the
infield. The heavy traffic allowed Jeffrey to close the gap that Landis had built.

On the ninth lap, Landis got a little too high in turn three and that allowed Jeffrey to get around him for the lead. From there, Jeffrey used the lapped
traffic to his advantage.

But on the next lap, the yellow flag came out for Chad Meyer, who stopped in turn one. That put Landis on Jeffrey's tail for the restart. However, the
first attempt at a restart was called back by Clark because he felt Jeffrey had taken off too early.

On the next restart, Landis used a masterful slide job to take the point from Jeffrey and he never looked back, even while hitting lapped traffic again on
the 16th circuit.

Landis was a happy celebrant in victory lane, performing a wing dance and hugging those around him. He noted the $5,000 payday and said it would
probably mean more to his little team than the $140,000 payday the winner of Saturday's Knoxville Nationals finale would get.

Jeffrey settled for second, Jesse Hockett was third, Brian Ellenberger fourth, Jason Martin fifth, Justin Henderson sixth, Jeremy Campbell seventh, Clint
Garner eighth, Dion Hindi ninth and Travis Whitney 10th.

The sixth-place finish for Henderson was particularly noteworthy since he came from the back of the field after winning the B-Main. He had suffered a
misfortune in his heat race when his left-rear tire went flat while he was leading. The race went under a yellow flag for a stopped car and Henderson was
forced to pull in to the work area for the tire, giving up the lead. He could not make it back into a transfer spot.

Non-qualifiers' heat races were won by Landis, Jeffrey, Ellenberger, Hockett and Martin. The B-Main was won by Henderson, who transferred to the A along
with Danny Smith, Kyle Hirst and James Mosher. Knoxville Raceway's 360 point leader Jake Peters suffered the biggest misfortune in the B-Main as he and
Hirst got together while fighting for the final transfer spot. The contact sent Peters spinning in turn one.

In addition to the non-qualifiers' events, scramble races were held for the top 10 qualifiers for Saturday's C-Main, B-Main and A-Main. Jon Corbin won the
C Scramble while Gary Wright won the B Scramble.

The A Scramble saw a melee at the start as cars were fighting for position near the back of the field. Fred Rahmer and Craig Dollansky got together on
that first lap and the contact left Dollansky with serious front-end damage. He did not restart. Rahmer was able to restart despite having skimmed the
fence in turn three.

After that incident, the race stayed green with Don Droud Jr. getting the win. Donny Schatz put a last-corner move on Jason Solwold to get second. That
helped Schatz to amass enough points to put himself on the pole for Saturday night's A-Main finale.

In the accompanying Factory Value Parts World Challenge, a special non-points race for drivers who qualify through various international events, Australia's
Brooke Tatnell took the $10,000 win in the 16-lap, 16-car event. Missouri's Brian Brown, a regular weekly competitor at the Knoxville Raceway, took
second. Schatz took third.
