Tony Stewart Racing Announces Second World of Outlaws Sprint
Series Team
Donny Schatz Set to Join Tony Stewart Racing Lineup in 2008
KNOXVILLE, Iowa (Aug. 11, 2007) – Two-time NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series champion
Tony Stewart announced tonight that World of Outlaws (WoO) Sprint Series star
and defending champion Donny Schatz will join Tony Stewart Racing (TSR)
beginning with the 2008 season. Schatz will drive a second WoO Sprint Series car
that will compete alongside the No. 20 Bass Pro Shops/Chevrolet machine
currently driven by Paul McMahan.
“I’m excited about joining forces with a proven winner,” said Schatz, a proven
winner himself having won over 80 WoO races, including 13 this year. “Tony
Stewart has been a winner in everything he does, and his race team is no
different. His organization has always been, and will continue to be,
top-notch.”
Upon the conclusion of the 2007 racing season, Donny Schatz Motorsports (DSM)
will merge with TSR.
“I am extremely pleased to welcome Donny Schatz into our organization,” said
Stewart, TSR team owner. “To have the opportunity to work with a driver of his
caliber is a great opportunity for all of us. His skill behind the wheel will
continue to help TSR grow into a stronger race team.
“Just as Levi Jones, Tracy Hines and Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., have made our USAC
program better, and just as Paul McMahan has provided stability to our World of
Outlaws team, Donny will only add to our open-wheel presence.”
Schatz will continue to pilot his familiar No. 15. The Chevrolet-powered winged
sprint car will be overseen by crew chief Ricky Warner, who joined TSR in June.
Sponsorship for the No. 15 team will be announced in the near future.
“Ricky and I have a tremendous relationship,” said Schatz, who teamed with
Warner to win last year’s title. “The chemistry we have is what makes it work.
We motivate each other to keep getting better and better. Together we feel like
we’re capable of doing just about anything. Ricky and I did a lot of special
things last year, and we’re looking forward to the future with this new team.”
Schatz and his DSM team will continue to pursue the 2007 WoO Sprint Series
championship. All media requests and inquiries regarding Schatz need to be
directed to DSM team public relations representative Bill Klingbeil, who can be
reached by e-mail at bk3pr@aol.com.
Since its formation in November 2000, TSR has earned seven owner championships.
Danny Lasoski earned TSR’s first championship in its inaugural season competing
in the WoO Sprint Series, taking the 2001 title. J.J. Yeley, Stewart’s teammate
at Joe Gibbs Racing, earned a USAC Sprint car championship for TSR in 2003. And
in a co-owner role with Bob East, TSR won four straight USAC Silver Crown
championships from 2002 to 2005 with a handful of drivers that included Yeley,
Kasey Kahne and Dave Steele. In 2006, TSR earned the USAC Sprint car title with
driver Josh Wise. Additionally, TSR has three Knoxville Nationals championships
in the WoO Sprint Series, as Lasoski captured wins in the famed winged sprint
car event in 2001, 2003 and 2004.
