Knoxville Championship Cup Series Begins in Earnest Saturday
by: Brian Stickel

KNOXVILLE, IA (May 16) - With three rain outs in four weeks, the sprint car drivers vying for the Knoxville Championship Cup are anxious to dice it out on the legendary ˝ mile dirt track Saturday night.

2007 Champion Blackjack Brian Brown will have his hands full trying to repeat his victorious season in 2008. Brown’s Uncle, Danny “The Dude” Lasoski is the current points leader after the World of Outlaws show May 3rd.

The Knoxville Championship Cup Series expects to see over thirty-five of the 850 horse powered 410 sprint cars and about the same number of cars in the 360 development class. “Every one of these races are fast and furious.” Stated Ralph Capitani, Knoxville Race Director. “Over the course of each Saturday night we have anywhere from 12 to 14 races that range in length from 7 laps to 25 laps. With action that fast nobody ever gets bored.”

Sprint Cars are basically all power and muscle. Weighing only 1275 pounds and sporting engines that produce over 850 horsepower these rockets achieve speeds of 140 miles per hour on the straightaway. With only one gear these beasts just barely tamed by the courageous drivers who attempt to control them.

Tickets for Saturday’s events are just $12 for adults and $3 for kids 6-14. Hot laps start at 6:45 with time trials starting at 7:30.

Legendary Knoxville Raceway boasts 25,000 seats and host races every Saturday night from mid-April through September. The 48th Annual Knoxville Nationals take place from August 6-9.
