Alley and Selvage take Knoxville Mid-Season Titles
By Bob Wilson

KNOXVILLE, IA (June 28) – The 55th Knoxville Raceway Mid-Season championship saw Billy Alley and Dustin Selvage capture 2008 titles at this legendary central Iowa racing facility.

It seemed to take forever for the 410 sprint feature to get started as two reds and two yellows slowed what would eventually be a very exciting race. Stoppages were for Don Droud, Jr. and Ricky Logan in separate incidents as they each struck the turn one fence. Yellows were for Bronson Maeschen spinning in turn two and Danny Lasoski for jumping the start. Lasoski was sent to the rear of the 25-car field but came back with abandon in the end.

When the race finally went green, it was Dion Hindi who jumped to the point with Skip Jackson right on his tail. As those two exited turn four at the end of the third lap it was obvious that something was wrong with the Jackson machine. Though slowing, Jackson appeared to not have control of his sprinter and as he headed into turn one the car would not turn. A broken right front axle caused him to strike the fence with enough force to flip his Knoxville-based sprinter.

On the restart, Hindi continued to lead with Alley, Mark Dobmeier and Calvin Landis in tow. By lap seven he was putting some distance between himself and Alley. It is also noteworthy to say that Lasoski had moved to 10th at this point in the race.
As ten laps went into the books, another yellow was thrown for a stopped car just as Hindi was beginning to pass lap cars. The ensuing restart saw Brian Brown come alive and move to fifth. A lap later he was running fourth on a track that had pushed the cushion terribly close to Knoxville’s tall fences. At this same time Lasoski too was moving forward. While most everyone ran the cushion at top speed, “The Dude” found the bottom of turns one and two to his liking and continued to press his Guy Forbrook mount forward.

By lap fifteen Hindi had managed a ten car-length advantage over Alley and was headed for lap traffic. The 17th circuit saw Lasoski make a clean slide of Brown in turns one and two to take fourth.

With heavy lap traffic in the mix, Alley had crept close to Hindi but needed some circumstances to go his way in order to make a pass. That happened on lap twenty when he took his SA Racing/JEI into a slider in turns one and two. Hindi nearly rammed Alley and the fence but was able to save his machine and maintain third as Dobmeier made a pass during that turn two near-gillhoolley.

Lap 23 proved fatal for Hindi as he struck the turn two fence while running fourth after perhaps losing a right-rear tire. The restart saw Alley followed by Dobmeier, Lasoski and Brown in that order.

Lasoski was able to overtake Dobmeier in turn two but the real thriller came in turn three when Brown, who had blown by Dobmeier, put a giant slider on Lasoski in turn three and made it stick. Coming across the finish line it was Alley, Brown, Lasoski and Dobmeier. Alley’s take on the night was $3,5000, Brown took home $3,000, Lasoski made $2,000 and Dobmeier pocketed $1,500. Calvin Landis was fifth. Rounding out the top ten were Justin Henderson, Jake Peters, Brandon Wimmer, Ryan Anderson and Davey Heskin.

The 360 feature event also started out with a “bang” as a six-car pileup took place in turn two. Among the unfortunates were Matt Moro and Gregg Bakker who were currently one and two in season points. Both restarted after much “work area” mechanical help. Bakker would retire early from this race while Moro managed an 11th place finish.

When the race restarted, Dustin Selvage took the lead from his pole position start. He was paced by Ryan Roberts and Randy Martin. All the front runners found the cushion to their liking and by lap 5, Selvage had only managed a 10 car-length advantage. Lap eight saw Selvage move into lap traffic and do a heady job of working his way through it. Clint Garner used these laps to move into third over Martin.

Just when Selvage found a clear track ahead of himself, a yellow came out for a car with a blown engine. The ensuing restart saw no change in the running order but all drivers would get a second chance when the yellow appeared at the end of lap sixteen for another stopped racer.

With four laps to go in this extended 20-lap Mid-Season race, Garner made a slider on the restart to take the second position from Roberts. None of the other front-end positions would change, however, and Selvage would bring his family-owned Eagle/Ostrich across the line for the $1,500 win. Garner stayed at second, Roberts maintained third, Martin was fourth and Jesse Giannetto took fifth after starting 18th. David Hall, Natalie Sather, Bret Mather (from 12th) and Josh Higday (from the tail) completed the top ten.

In trackside ceremonies during the evening, five people were inducted into the 30th annual Knoxville Raceway Hall of Fame. New inductees were Larry and Pat Patterson (Kansas City, MO), Bob Thompson (Des Moines), Mike Twedt (Huxley, IA) and Larry Ball, Sr. (Des Moines).
