Wietholder Wins First, Oliver, Jr. Thrills in Stock Cars
By Jake Croxton

DONNELLSON, IA. (Aug. 11, 2006) - Four different leaders took turns at the front of the Discount Tire IMCA Modified 20-lapper at the Lee County Speedway. Phillip Cossel, Jody Wood, and Dave Wietholder traded the top spot early on before Josh Foster assumed command and promptly left the field. The complexion of the event changed on a lap 15 caution after Foster’s air cleaner was identified as the cause for the debris caution, sending the race’s most dominant car to the tail. Over the final five laps, Foster charged through the field from his eleventh restart position and literally pushed Wietholder under the checkers. It was Wietholder’s first Donnellson Modified win in his Tim’s Machine Shop / PBM Performance Products / Linex Bedliners / Raider / Chevy. Foster, Dennis LaVeine, Wood, and Billy Roberts completed the top five.

Rookie Budweiser IMCA Stock Car competitor Abe Huls led the opening eight laps of their 15-lap finale. Huls gave up the top spot to John Oliver, Jr. on lap 9, but Jeff Mueller made the Danville, Iowa driver work for the win. Mueller led at the white flag, only to give way off turn two back to the Oliver Tri-County Heating & Air / Century 21 / Monte Carlo. Huls, Kirk Kinsley, and Ryan Meyer ended the event in the top five.

A first-time winner entered victory lane in the Donnellson Tire Hobby Stock feature as Doug Fenton put his Kole King Flat track Racing / Doug’s Drywall / the Roofing Company / Nova in the front on lap 9. Fenton, who came up just inches short a week ago, held off a final charge from John Oliver, Jr. to earn the win. Oliver, Jr. nearly went over after taking a detour through the infield on the final lap. Matt Gavin, Rodger Dresden, Dan Wenig, and Jeff Soper rounded out the top five.

The caution-free Arrowhead Bowl B-Modified 15-lapper went to defending track champion Wyatt Lantz. The Bowen, Ill. driver overtook Jim Gillenwater five laps from the finish to pad his points lead. Phillip Beard, Brandon Savage, and Joe Hooper followed across the line.

Tyler Schulte racked up another GM Giant Wild Thing victory. Schulte held off Dennis Schulte, Travis DeMint, David Helenthal, and Gordon Blankenship, Jr. over the 12-lap distance.

Next week, IMCA Late Models make their return to the 3/8-mile. Mark Burgtorf won the last IMCA National Points event back in June. All classes will be in competition. Grandstand admission is $10.
