Burgtorf takes round 3 for Ideal Ready Mix IMCA Late Models at Donnellson
By Jake Croxton

DONNELLSON, Ia (July 27) - Former Lee County Speedway track champion Mark Burgtorf showed why he was so good for so many years on a weekly basis at the Donnellson, Iowa 3/8-mile. The Quincy, Ill. driver avoided a lap one tangle that eliminated Terry Neal, Lonnie Bailey, Tom Goble, and Adam Helmick, and worked around Matt Strassheim on lap 12 of the 25-lapper and crossed the checkers first during Big Country 103.1 / Speedway Sign Shop Christmas in July.

An uninjured Neal ended up on his side as several cars got crossed up on the opening lap. When things got rolling, it was veteran Johnny Johnson leading the pack from his pole starting position. Johnson gave up the lead to Strassheim shortly after the event's final caution for Billy Genenbacher's oil fire on lap 8. Strassheim led two circuits before Burgtorf took his Rick's Transit Repair / Turner Bros. Garage / Summy Tire / Rayburn / Fusion to the cushion and went on to claim victory, Strassheim held on for bridesmaid honors, while Justin Reed, Tom Darbyshire, and Brian Harris rounded out the top five.

Rich Smith and Billy Roberts put on a show over the final half of the Discount Tire IMCA Modified 20-lapper. Smith earned his fourth win of the season by just half a car length in his JC Dubil Race Car Parts / Weikert Iron & Metal / Harris / Chevy. Josh Foster followed the lead duo across the line ahead of Kevin Cale and sixteenth-starter Mike Weikert, Jr.

Doug Huls led the opening seven laps of the Budweiser IMCA Stock Car main and looked to be on his way to capturing his second straight A-feature victory. Huls would finish third after giving way to John Oliver, Jr. and Jeff Mueller at the race's halfway point. Oliver, Jr. drove on to victory in his Oliver Tri-County Heating & Air / Lips to Go / Dunham Trucking / Cutlass, while Mueller, Huls, fourteenth starter Jason Cook, and Chris Wibbell ended the event in the top five.

Rookie driver Derek St. Clair ran an outstanding race in Donnellson Tire Hobby Stock action. The teenager led 12 of the 15 laps but got burned on a late restart. Doug Fenton drove his Fenton Sales & Pawn Shop / Kole King Flat Track Racing / D&L Machine Shop / Nova to the front and held off Dan Wenig, St. Clair, Ray Raker, and Dean Kratzer.

Jim Gillenwater topped the Arrowhead Bowl B-Modified finale in his Discount Tire / SJ Smith & Welding / Fastenal of Keokuk / Pierce. Gillenwater was part of the event's first caution, a six-car pile-up, and came from the tail in the 12-lapper. Josh Larson worked past early leader Scott Boles for second, while Bob Jennings, and Jeff Waterman completed the top five.

The GM Giant Wild Thing feature lived up to its name as time shorted the event to just six laps. Chris Loring, Jr. didn't mind as he picked up his first career A-feature win in the Blankenship, Inc. / Shadow. Brent Hartley, points leader Travis DeMint, Jim Oliver, III, and Cory Scheetz finished in the top five.

Next week, Racemart will sponsor round four of the Ideal Ready Mix IMCA Late Model Series at Lee County Speedway. All five weekly classes will accompany the IMCA Late Models on the card. Race time is 7:30.
