Frankel goes flag-to-flag in Donnellson Late Model opener

By Jake Croxton

DONNELLSON, IA (May 16) – Jason Frankel dominated the Pepsi-sponsored 25-lap Ideal Ready Mix IMCA Late Model feature at the Lee County Speedway in Donnellson, Iowa. Frankel redrew a front starting position and made the most of it as he cruised to a flag-to-flag victory in the non-stop feature. The pilot of the Xtreme Race Motors / Chevrolet lapped up to seventh place in the first of five IMCA Late Model events at the Lee County Fairgrounds 3/8-mile. Matt Bailey had a strong showing in the runner-up position, while defending track champion Tom Darbyshire finished on the podium. Justin Reed and Denny Woodworth completed the top 5 in the 20-car field. Matt Strassheim, Frankel, and Reed scored Heat Race victories.

Josh Foster held off a charging Bill Roberts to claim his second Miller Lite IMCA Modified victory of 2008.
Foster’s Mohrfeld Electric / Racemart / Chevy survived a clean and compact battle throughout the 15-lapper that saw most of the starting field slice and dice for the entire distance. Foster and Roberts checked out and settled the duel amongst themselves, while Dean McGee climbed from eight to third in the closing laps.
Tyler Cale finished fourth and Andy Krieger placed a season-best fifth. Krieger and Brandon Savage won Heat Races.

Jeff Mueller notched another Budweiser IMCA Stock Car victory in the 15-lapper. While Mueller and Jason Cook worked out front, the best battle all night was for third as John Oliver, Jr., Jake Wenig, and Nick Fenton raced to the checkered flag in a three-wide scramble.
Wenig faded high in the final corner, diamonded it off for the bottom, and nipped Fenton and Oliver, Jr. at the line to claim third. Fenton, Wenig, and Ray Raker earned Heat Race victory.

Dean Kratzer pulled off a three-peat in Donnellson Tire Hobby Stock action. After trouble in the heat race, Kratzer was forced to start shotgun on the 18-car field. By lap 5, he was challenging early leader Jim Lynch for the race lead. Kratzer powered to the front and led the final laps of the time-shortened 15-lapper. Dan Wenig, Jeff Soper, Rob Wilsey, and Jim Oliver, Jr. completed the top 5. Wenig, Austin Schulte, and Oliver, Jr. topped Heat Races.

Jim Gillenwater topped the Lawson Racing Engines and Parts Supply SportMod 15-lapper for his second consecutive victory. Gillenwater and Rob Kirchner race to the line in the top 2 spots. Joe Hooper, Phillip Cossel, and Paul Lawson rounded out the top five.
Hooper and Levi Smith won the Heats.

Jim Oliver, III stopped Rob Hammel’s win-streak in the Shottenkirk Parts Express Wild Thing 12-lapper.
Oliver, III beat Hammel, Dan Keltner, Gabe Harrison, and Brent Hartley to the checkers. Dustan Fenton, Hammel, and Oliver, III scored Heat victories.

The O’Reilly Auto Parts Winged Outlaw Warriors make their inaugural appearance at the Lee County Speedway next Friday, May 23. IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars, Hobby Stocks, and Wild Things (FEATURE ONLY) will join the 360 Sprinters. Adult admission is $12.
