Bounty stays intact as Kratzer’s Drive for 5 is a success
By Jake Croxton

DONNELLSON, IA (June 6) - Dean Kratzer worked around Brian Holmes and Jeff Soper and went to complete the Drive for 5 as he copped the 15-lap Donnellson Tire Hobby Stock feature event. The bounty for next week’s event is heading toward astronomical with an extra $400 thrown on top of the Hobby Stock purse. That makes the winner’s share a whopping $625. Kevin Cheney had a solid run, coming home in the runner-up position. Bounty hunter Luke McLaughlin finished third, while Dan Wenig and Derek St. Clair rounded out the top five. Cheney, Kratzer, and St. Clair won Heat Races, while Hurdland, Mo’s Brian Howerton topped the Rookie Rally.

Jeff Mueller drove into victory lane for the second time in 2008 during the Budweiser IMCA Stock Car 15-lapper. Mueller found his way through the traffic first and beat a pair of former track champions, Jason Cook and Dave Hemsted, to the line. Early leader Corey Strothman and back-row starter Nick Fenton came home in the top five. Cook and Mueller won the Heat Races.

Tyler Cale put a slide job on early race leader Brandon Savage to claim his first Miller Lite IMCA Modified victory of the season. Josh Foster gave it everything he had but had to settle for the runner-up spot. Last week’s feature winner Dean McGee, Sr. crossed the line third, while Mike Weikert, Jr. and Chris Larson ended the event in the top five. Savage and Larson topped the Heat Races.

Rob Hammel blasted past Dustan Fenton to rack up another Shottenkirk Parts Express Wild Thing feature win to his credit. Hammel took the lead late in the going from Fenton. Riverside’s Bill Whalen, Jr., Niota’s Brent Hartley, and Quincy’s Richard Vandermaiden rounded out the top five. Hammel and Dakota Fenton scored Heat Race wins.

Jim Gillenwater passed race-long leader Joe Hooper with a lap to go and stole the Lawson Racing Engines and Parts Supply SportMod 15-lapper. Mark Winkel, Jim Fuller, and Jack Evans, Jr. raced to a top five finish. Hooper and Fuller won in Heat Race action.

Next week, Shelly Keltner of Shottenkirk will be adding money to the Wild Thing purse, including a $200 winner’s share and two mystery spots during KRNQ 96.3 and the Pepsi Inside Track Night at the races. For more information, punch www.leecountyspeedway.com into your Web browser.
