Gharst bests Lasoski in non-stop WOW feature at Donnellson
By Jake Croxton

DONNELLSON, IA (June 18) – Decatur, Ill. driver Kaley Gharst piloted Dale Oaks’ #41X 360 Sprint Car to his first career O’Reilly Auto Parts Winged Outlaw Warriors victory, topping a stellar field in the WOW’s first visit to the Lee County Speedway.

Gharst worked around no less than former World of Outlaws champion Danny Lasoski near the midpoint of the event as the leaders worked traffic in the 23-car field. From there, it was all Gharst in the caution-free 20-lapper. Lasoski slowed under the white flag and failed to finish, ending up 11th in the final rundown. Louisiana’s Jason Johnson crossed the checkers in second ahead of Iowa drivers Terry McCarl and Josh Higday. Missouri’s Brian Brown rounded out the top five. WOW regulars Jonathan Cornell, Josh Fisher and Randy Martin were next in the rundown ahead of Josh Schneiderman and John Schulz.

Tyler Cale drew a front-row starting spot and led every lap of the caution-free Miller Lite IMCA Modified 20-lapper. Cale was unchallenged throughout and earned a guaranteed starting spot in the July 3 Liberty Cup. Josh Foster followed across the line in second, while Bill Roberts, Marshalltown’s Brett Ladehoff, and Lonne Heap completed the top five.

Jason Cook and Jim Redman battled throughout the Budweiser IMCA Stock Car 15-lapper. The former track champion Cook earned the free pass into the Liberty Cup as he beat Nick Fenton and John Oliver, Jr. to the line. Redman faded to fourth, while Abe Huls finished fifth.

Tyler Schulte dominated the Shottenkirk Parts Express Wild Thing 12-lapper as he took the lead early on and drove to his first victory of 2008. Wayne Noble and Bill Whalen, Jr. crossed the line behind Schulte, while Chuck Fullenkamp and Jena Barthelmes ended the event in the top five.

The next event for the Lee County Speedway will be the Pilot Grove Savings Bank Mid-Season Championship on June 20. All gates open at 5:30 for the 5-class show. Hot laps are scheduled for 7pm with racing to follow at 7:30. Grandstand general admission $8 for Adults, $7 for Seniors, $5 for Students 11-17, and Free for Kids 10 and under. Pit passes are $20.
