Denny Woodworth picks up first LCS IMCA Late Model victory of 2008

By Jake Croxton

DONNELLSON, Ia (August 15) – “The Racing Lawyer” Denny Woodworth scored his first $800 winner’s check of 2008 during the 25-lap Ideal Ready Mix IMCA Late Model feature at the Lee County Speedway. The Mendon, Ill. driver withstood heavy pressure from a host of competitors after a lap 22 restart erased a half straightaway lead.

Woodworth raced by early leaders Tom Goble and Dustin Griffin by the fifth circuit and commanded the majority of the event until Robby Warner slowed with 3 laps to go. Goble ducked in behind Woodworth, whose car was glued to the bottom of the 3/8-mile. 2008 race winners Jay Johnson and Jason Frankel took to the topside and the quartet finished two-by-two under the checkers with Woodworth holding off Johnson by a half car length. Frankel nipped Goble for third, while Justin Reed completed the top five.

The Budweiser IMCA Stock Cars staged very little drama at the front of the field as Jeff Mueller checked out and scored his fifth win of the season. The race for second, however, saw a three-wide battle twice in the final three laps. Jason Cook was able to cop the second position ahead of Jim Redmann. Dave Hemsted and Patrick Mincer ended the event in the top five.

John Oliver, Jr. earned the checkered flag in the Donnellson Tire Hobby Stock 15-lapper. Derek St. Clair was able to hang on for his best finish of 2008 in second, but was never able to seriously challenge Oliver, Jr. Rodger Dresden, Dean Kratzer, and Brian Holmes followed Oliver, Jr. and St. Clair across the line.

Defending track champion Travis DeMint and Chuck Fullenkamp put on a show at the front of the 12-lap Shottenkirk Parts Express Wild Thing A-Main. DeMint made the winning pass just past the flagstand on the white flag lap and scored the race win. Fullenkamp, after taking home the Figure 8 race two weeks ago, brought home his best finish of 2008 in second. Rob Hammel, Chris Loring, Jr. and Brent Hartley rounded out the top five.

Jim Gillenwater racked up another Lawson Racing Engines and Parts Supply SportMod trophy. Gillenwater took the lead late from Levi Smith and sailed home to the 15-lap victory. Joe Hooper, Rob Kirchner, and Mike Browning finished third through fifth.

Next week, Backslash Technologies will give away a computer during the IMCA Late Model Season Championship. All six classes will be on the card on Friday, August 22. Race time is 7:30.
