DONNELLSON, IA (August 29) – The spotlight was on the championship battles at the Lee County Speedway as two points races came down to the final checkered flag for the IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing program.

For Montrose’s Josh Foster, it was simple: win the race, win the title. The Miller Lite IMCA Modified ace was able to lay claim to his second LCS track title, holding off Bill Roberts in the late stages of the 25-lapper. Foster and Roberts left the 18-car field and settled it amongst themselves as fellow challenger Dean McGee, Sr. faded to a seventh-place finish. Roberts showed Foster the nose several times in the last five laps, but was unable to make the pass and finished second in the race and the championship standings. Foster’s Five Star Drywall / Farmington Tax Service / Chevy earned the sweep – the race and the title. Rich Smith, Rob Kirchner, and Brandon Rothzen raced to top five finishes.

Jason Cook was in the same situation heading into the Budweiser IMCA Stock Car 20-lapper. Cook needed a win and some help to overtake Jeff Mueller if he was to secure the championship. Cook raced to the lead and stayed there and scored his second feature win of 2008. Disaster struck for Mueller, as he came up lame with a flat tire on lap 6 and was unable to make the call for the restart – handing the championship to Cook. Nick Fenton had an interesting night. After an early spin, the youngster battled all the way through the pack to come home in second. Veterans Jim Redman, Bert McDaniel, and John Oliver, Jr. completed the top five.

By virtue of car count, when Dean Kratzer fired his Donnellson Tire Hobby Stock, he was crowned the 2008 track champion. Kratzer did not disappoint as he held off several challenges from Dan Wenig and took the 20-lap feature event as well. The race was plagued by attrition as only eight of the fifteen starters were around at the checkered flag. Behind Kratzer and Wenig were Jeff Soper, Derek St. Clair, and Jacob Smith.

Jim Gillenwater already had a lock on the Lawson Racing Engines and Parts Supply SportMod championship and elected to start at the back of the 23-car field for an extra $200 from the Pepsi Inside Track. Gillenwater never really challenged, coming home in eighth place. Joe Hooper from the outset and looked to have the race well in hand, but a spin in turn three sent Hooper pitside. That handed the lead over to Chad Sovern and he held off Levi Smith to pick up the feature win. Mike Browning, Josh Larson, and Scott Boles rouned out the top five.

Rob Hammel, 2008 Shottenkirk Parts Express Wild Thing champion, led most of their 15-lap finale. Hammel gave way to Chris Loring, Jr., allowing the Keokuk, Iowa, driver to pick up his third race win in a row. Chuck Fullenkamp finished second, while Brent Hartley, Travis DeMint, and Hammel laid claim to top five finishes.

The Lee County Speedway will lay dormant until Saturday night, September 20. The Sebastian Sandblasting & Powder Coating 305 Sprint Car Spectacular will pay $1,500 to win the feature event. Also running are the Lawson Racing Engines and Parts Supply SportMods, Mod Lites, and Shottenkirk Parts Express Wild Things. For more information, consult www.leecountyspeedway.com
