Fraise up to “Challenge” at Donnellson
By Jake Croxton

DONNELLSON, IA (Oct. 4) - Former Lee County Speedway dominator Tony Fraise was among five drivers to capture “Thunder in the Heartland Challenge” trophies in the second of three Fall Special events at Lee County Speedway. A stellar field of 116 racecars in five classes graced the 3/8-mile.

Fraise redrew an eight and had to work through the field during the Miller Lite IMCA-type Modified 20-lapper. Jim Gillenwater decided to put Quincy, Ill. hot shoe Michael Long behind the wheel for a night, and for 16-laps, Gillenwater looked to be the smartest guy on the property. Long used the cushion to negotiate the Lee County Fairgrounds oval, holding fellow Quincy driver Tony Dunker at bay. However, several mid-race cautions would be Long’s undoing, as Fraise picked off one after the other until residing on Long’s back bumper by the final restart on lap 14. Long jumped the curb in turn three on lap 16, allowing Fraise to race by and score the $500 victory. Long, Dunker, Jeff Waterman, and Tony Olson raced to top five finishes in the 25-car field.

The Budweiser IMCA-type Stock Car 20-lapper was again the main attraction, as has been the case for the majority of the 2008 season. In a caution-free feature, 2008 track champ Jason Cook earned a five car-length victory – but the rest of the field raced three- and four-wide and put on a show. Jim Redman, early-leader Nick Fenton, Bert McDaniel, and John Oliver, Jr. swapped positions for most of the latter half of the finale and finished in that order.

Rob Wilsey provided some late-race drama in the Donnellson Tire Hobby Stock 15-lapper as he was the race winner of record over Dan Wenig and Jim Lynch. Donnellson’s Lynch led the first 13-laps before Wilsey and Wenig simultaneously ducked underneath Lynch and relegated him to a disappointing third-place showing. Wilsey outgunned Wenig to the line to take the victory. Dean Kratzer and AJ Johnson rounded out the top five.

IMCA Late Model regular Dustin Griffin has proven an ability to drive just about anything - from Demo cars, tough trucks, and Crate Late Models to his regular ride in IMCA competition. This night would find Griffin in Tony Dunker’s Lawson Racing Engines and Parts Supply SportMod and, in his first-ever Modified start, he made the winning pass on Jerad Fuller coming to the checkered flag. Jim Gillenwater, Thad Gaylord, and Chad Sovern completed the top five.

Jim Oliver, III finally put all the pieces together and claimed the Shottenkirk Parts Express Wild Thing 12-lapper. Oliver, III has been close as of late after picking up a couple early-season victories. This night was his as he beat Chris Loring, Jr. and Travis DeMint to the line. Jim Garrett and Irv Fosaaen finished in the top five.

Next up for LCS will be the season-ending Shiverfest on Saturday, October 25. Keep watching www.leecountyspeedway.com for race information.
