Cook edges Mueller for win at Lee County Burgtorf opens Drive for Five with convincing win
By Dewain Hulett

DONNELLSON, Iowa (May 14, 2010) – It took four weeks, but Lee County Speedway finally got its opening points night of the 2010 season in the books during action, Friday.

Heavy rain through the week threatened yet another night of racing, but hard work and dedication from track personnel made for a successful night, though the track was rough by Lee County standards.

With six classes on hand, fans were given more than their money’s worth, as Mark Burgtorf, Jason Cook, Derek Coleman, William Michel, Jake Wenig and Josh Foster all picked up feature wins.

Burgtorf opened the 2010 campaign at Lee County right where he left off in 2009, in victory lane. The Quincy, Ill., driver lapped all the way to ninth place at the checkered flag, and was nearly a half a lap ahead of second place running Rob Toland. Denny Woodworth, Colby Springsteen and Jay Johnson rounded out the top 5.

In the Budweiser IMCA Stock Car feature event, which proved to be the best race of the night, Jason Cook edged Jeff Mueller by inches at the finish line to pick up the win. Running second on a restart with two laps remaining, Cook got to the inside of Mueller and the two ran the final two laps side by side. The winning margin was less than a foot for cook, who had been passed earlier in the race by Mueller. John Oliver, Jr., Matt Greiner and Abe Huls rounded out the top five.

The Miller IMCA Modified feature proved to be a good one as well, as a late restart set up another good feature. Foster had taken the lead in the middle stages of the race and was running away out front until the caution. He held Long off on the first of two late races restarts, only to have the caution fly for the second time. This time Long got a better run, and actually passed Foster for the laed, but the three-time and defending track champion was able to power back by as Long pushed in turn two. That allowed Brandon Rothzen, who was running closely behind the battle up front, to pass Long as well. At the finish, Rothsen was in second, Long had fell to third, while Wyatt Lantz and early race leader Lonnie Heap rounded out the top 5.

For Coleman, the Shottenkirk Parts Express IMCA Sport Mods feature win was the first of his career at Lee County. He took the lead in the middle portion of the event and was never challenged late on the way to the win. Joe Bliven, who spun late, but was saved by a car that spun before him in turns 3 and 4, finished second. Rodger Dresden, AJ Johnson and Cook rounded out the top 5.

Another first time winner visited winner’s circle, as Michel won the Fienberg Metals Recycling feature event. He had to hold of a late and hard charge from Chuck Fullenkamp, who started 18th on the night. Fullenkamp would have to settle for second though, followed by Mike Fisher, Jerry Ostby and Dakota Fenton.

In the Donnellson Tire Hobby Stock feature, Jake Wenig was never truly challenged, as he won for the pole. Jim Lynch made a late charge to put a little pressure on Wenig late, following a restart, but could do nothing with the eventual winner. Jeremy Pundt had a solid run finishing in the third spot, while Rob Wilsey and Ray Raker rounded out the top five.

Speaking of five, next week is Casey’s General Store Night at Lee County Speedway, stop by area and participating Casey’s stores to pick up a ticket for $5 entry into next Friday’s races. On tap next week are Modifieds, Sport Mods, Stock Cars, Hobby Stocks and Wild Things. Hot laps are at 7 p.m., racing starts at 7:30 p.m.
