Lynch gets first career feature win at LCS
Cook, Long, Ostby, Gillenwater also take wins

By Dewain Hulett

DONNELLSON, Iowa (May 22, 2010) – Finally it is over. The long winless streak at Jim Lynch’s home track has come to an end, as the Donnellson Hobby Stock driver picked up his first feature win at the track during racing action, Saturday, at Lee County Speedway.
Jason Cook also picked up an exciting feature win, while Michael Long, Jerry Ostby and Jim Gillenwater got wins as well.
Lynch’s motor went away with two laps to go, as he was chasing race leader Jeremy Pundt, but the story was far from over for the eventual Donnellson Tire Hobby Stock winner.

Pundt led the first 14 circuits, holding a straightaway lead on the final lap as he exited turn two. It was then that the story got flipped and rearranged.

The leader broke a ball joint on the left front and went spinning down the backstretch, just as Lynch, who knew he had a engine that had nearly given up, was prepared to shut it down. Just then, Lynch said he looked up to see Pundt spinning down the backstretch. He decided to limp it home as best he could.

Dave Cloke closed quickly on the struggling 66 machine, as they worked through turns 3 and 4, a lapped car slowed both as they made contact exiting turn 4. Cloke finished second with a flat tire, as Lynch limped across the line in front of him for the win.

Josh Trip finished third, Lane Kauffman fourth and Tanner Thomann fifth. Pundt finished 9th as the last car on the lead lap.

In the Budweiser IMCA Stock Car feature event, Cook started ninth and quickly began working his way to the front. Eventually chasing early race leader Corey Strothman, who left on lap 12 with a flat tire after making contact with second place running, at the time, Dave Warth. Cook used the mistake to take the lead and hold it for the final three laps to get the win. Warth finished second, Abe Huls third and Chris Webb was fourth. John Oliver, Jr., rounded out the top five.

Long dominated the Miller Lite IMCA Modified feature event, but very heavy lapped traffic made the race exciting late. The leader found himself following a large pack of cars for the final three laps, allowing eventual second place finisher Wyatt Lantz to cut what was a straightaway lead down to about 5 cars lengths at the finish. Josh Foster was third, Jeff Waterman finished fourth and Dustin Crear was in the five spot.

Both Ostby, Wild Things, and Gillenwater, Sport Mods, won from the pole in their respective races.

It was a quick and efficient night of racing, which saw only four cautions all night, including just two in the features, both of which came in the Sport Mods feature, which was the first of the night.

Because of the postponement of Friday’s racing action, Casey’s General Store Fan Appreciation night will be held this Friday, May 28, where the Casey’s $5 coupons will be accepted. Pick up a coupon/ticket at area Casey’s stores and get into the races for just $5. On the agenda Friday night are Late Models, Modifieds, Sport Mods, Stocks Cars, Hobby Stocks and Wild Things.

Also, don’t forget Saturday, May 29, is the first of two scheduled Eve of Destructions at Lee County Speedway. Rollover Contest, Bus Races, Figure Race, Trailer Race, and other great classes all designed to destroy whatever form of motor vehicle involved. Race time is 7 p.m.
