Five classes, eight features = a lot of racing at Lee County
Eight drivers take features wins as three features made up from June 4

By Dewain Hulett

DONNELLSON, Iowa (June 14, 2010) – There was all the excitement, and then some, one would expect with eight features on the docket Friday night, at Lee County Speedway, in Donnellson.

The night opened with three make-up features from, Friday, June 4, followed by a full night of racing in all five classes. When all was said and done for the night, there were eight different winners to visit victory lane.

Rich Smith won the make-up Modified feature, while Corey Strothman won the Stock Car and CJ Loring was the Wild Things winner.

After a solid set of heat races, the regularly scheduled features saw Jason Cook win his second Sport Mod feature, while Jake Wenig picked up his third Hobby Stock feature. In the Modifieds, Josh Foster got the win, while Jeff Mueller won his second Stock Car feature in a row. Dakota Fenton was named the winner of the Wild Things feature.

The best of the three make-up features came in the form of the IMCA Stock Car feature event, eventually won by Corey Strothman. Strothman led early, but Mueller found his way around to lead lap eight and continued to lead until the white flag.

Strothman closed in over the final two laps and was literally pushing Mueller down the front and backstretch before finally passing him back coming out of turn 2 on the last lap. He led at the stripe by about a half-car length to get the win. Mueller would finish second, with Matt Greiner in third.

Loring was running third heading into the last lap or the Wild Things make-up feature, when the front two cars got pinched into the wall in turn two. When that happened, it was like the waters parted for Loring who dove to the bottom and ran away for the win. Bryan Rodefer and William Michel rounded out the top three.

It was all Smith in the opening Modified feature of the night, as he dominated throughout on the way to an easy win. Wyatt Lantz and Brandon Rothzen ran second and third respectively.

As action moved to regularly scheduled feature events, the racing didn’t slow down.

Tanner Thomann led most of the Hobby Stocks feature event, only to have another last lap pass give the win to Wenig. This time Wenig had used the outside for several laps trying to get around, but heading into the first turn of the last lap he went to the inside. Thomann stayed in his line, while Wenig was able to slip underneath and pick up his third win of the season. Thomann held on for second, while Dan Wenig ran to a third place finish.

Mueller, who almost won the first IMCA Stock Car feature of the evening, changed a motor after the first feature and missed the heat races. Thus, he was forced to start at the back of the field with a brand new engine that had never even been run. Well it worked out fine, as he went from the back to the front, but it wasn’t easy after he got there.

Greiner used a bump-and-run move on a restart to get the race lead briefly, but a caution gave the lead back to Mueller and that was all it took for the New London driver to get the win. Greiner would finish second, followed by Jason Cook in third.

In the second Wild Things feature, Loring finished first on the track, but after refusing a claim in the pit area, he was relegated to last place, giving the win to Dakota Fenton. Michel and Jerry Ostby rounded out the top three.

Jason Cook won his second IMCA Sport Mod feature of the season, in dominating fashion. He took the lead early and was never challenged in the event. Joe Bliven, who was knocked out of line and back a few spots early in the event, came back to finish a solid second place, while AJ Johnson finished in third.

The defending Modified Champion, Josh Foster, was the dominate car in the second feature event. As he had a lead as large as half a lap, but cautions made it closer, at least on restarts. He was never challenged, however, while picking up the win. Bill Roberts had his best run of the year, finishing second, while Jeff Waterman was third.

Friday, June 18, is Keokuk Community Night at Lee County Speedway. Keokuk residents show your ID to get in for $5. There will also be $1 hot dogs in honor of Father’s Day. The five regular classes will be back in action, including the Miller Lite Modifies, Budweiser IMCA Stock Cars, Donnellson Tire Hobby Stocks, Shottenkirk Parts Express IMCA Sport Mods and Feinberg Metal Recycling Wild Things. Hot laps start at 7 p.m., racing begins at 7:30 p.m.
