Foster, Wenig win again at Lee County
By Dewain Hulett

DONNELLSON, Ill. (July 9, 2010) – The annual Lee County Fair week meant a return of the Ideal Ready Mix Sprint Invaders to the Lee County Speedway, as the fair played host to an abbreviated night of racing.
Joining the Sprint Invaders were the Lee County Speedway regulars, Miller Lite IMCA Modifieds and Donnellson Tire Hobby Stocks.

It may have been a different type of race night, but it was business as usual in front of the two weekly classes at Lee County Speedway as Josh Foster (Modifieds) and Jake Wenig (Hobby Stocks) each found their way back to victory lane.

The Ideal Ready Mix Sprint Invaders saw Ben Wagoner get his first career Sprint Car win, as the series’ 2009 Rookie of the Year picked up the win. On a track that started to take rubber, Wagoner did everything a driver isn’t supposed to do, except win. He pitched the car sideways, spun and smoked the tires and made the winning pass on the outside! It worked out great for the young Emden, Ill., driver as he pulled away out front easily even after facing a late race restart with just three laps to go. Russ Hall ran second in the feature event after leading the early stages of the race.

After starting 11th, Foster used the high line, again, where nobody else was comfortable running and picked cars off quickly as he made his way to the front during the first half of the race. He then dominated the final stages of the race, surviving several restarts to pick up the win. Rich Smith, who followed Foster through the field, finished in the runner-up spot, while Adam Birck and Dean McGee, Sr., had perhaps their best runs of the year finishing third and fourth respectively. Derek Hamm rounded out the top five.

Wenig, like Foster, completely dominated the Hobby Stock feature, as he got to the front early and was never challenged for the win. In fact, the race was forced to go extra laps because of a caution on the white flag lap, and Wenig still won by nearly a half of a straightaway on the green-white-checkered finish. Jeremy Pundt had a strong run finishing second, while Tanner Thomann, who was forced to the back after a caution early in the race, charged all the way back to the third spot. Dan Wenig ran in the fourth spot, and Dane Fenton rounded out the top five.

Regular racing action returns to Lee County Speedway next week, as it is Elder Implement Co. Night at the races, with Hobby Stocks, Modifieds, Sport Mods, Stock Cars and Wild Things all on the agenda. Fans, if you wear John Deere green or something with a John Deere logo on it, you will get in for only $5. Hot laps start at 7 p.m. and racing begins at 7:30 p.m. Vintage cars from the Mississippi Valley Vintage Race Car Association will also be on hand for racing action, Friday.
