Aieky gets ‘Drive for Five’ win at Lee County Higdon, Strothman get second wins of 2010
By Dewain Hulett

DONNELLSON, IOWA (July 26, 2010) – Weather threatened and washed out racing to the north, Friday, but the action was good on the 3/8 mile at Lee County Speedway.

Jeff Aikey got another feature win, while Mitch Higdon (Sport Mods), Corey Strothman (Stock Cars), Michael Long (Modifieds), Dean Kratzer (Hobby Stocks) and Jerry Ostby (Wild Things) also got wins.

Aikey started in side row four and worked his was methodically to the front, and took the lead on lap 11 from TJ Criss. Aikey then survived a couple quick restarts to open a commanding lead before a late race caution set up a shootout between him and second place running Mark Burgtorf. Burgtorf could not use the opportunity to get the win, as Aikey held on for the victory. Burgtorf settle for second, followed by Denny Woodworth in third, Boone McLaughlin fourth and Jeff Guengerich in fifth.

In the Modified feature, Long started 11th and went to the front before the first caution flew on lap 19 of 20. He took the lead on the highside during lap 9 and was never threatened the rest of the way. Rich Smith came through the field as well to finish second, while Rob Kirchner had his best finish of the season in third. Mike Weikert, Jr., was fourth and Dean McGee, Sr., fifth.

It was all Higdon in the Sport Mods feature, as he came from 10th to win going away. He did  have a little help when early race leader Rodger Dresden lost brakes while leading, but was able to hold on for a fifth place finish. Joe Bliven led in the middle stages of the event, but slid back to third at the finish. Phillip Cossel was also running well, but could not do anything with Higdon, as he settled for second. Jason Cook, the current points leader, finished fourth.

It was more of the same in the Wild Things feature, as Ostby started third, took the lead on lap two and then checked out for the easy win. Seth Woodruff, who led lap one, ran well early but faltered with transmission trouble midway through the race. Darin Smith, in his first night at LCS, finished in second, while Chuck Fullenkamp came to third. Nick Wilkerson was fourth, while Mike Horning, Jr., had his best finish of the season in fifth.

Strothman started outside the front row and led every lap of the IMCA Stock Car feature event. As he ran away out front, it was outstanding racing for second through eighth. Jeff Mueller would eventually when that battle, finishing second in the event. Matt Greiner, Cale Samberg and Chris Webb rounded out the top five in that order.

The Hobby Stocks saw three cautions, but Kratzer dominated throughout the event, leading every lap for the win. Matt Tucker ran second most of the way, but never really threatened Kratzer for the win. Jeremy Pundt finished in the third spot, making a nice run from seventh. Dane Fenton finished in the fourth spot, while Tanner Thomann was fifth.

This Friday is Family Motors Night and the Steve Kirchner Memorial for IMCA Sport Mods. The Sport Mods feature will pay $450 to win, for more information check out www.leecountyspeedway.com. Also on the agenda will be a kids candy dash and all boys and girls that wear their summer league baseball jerseys get in free.
