Guss, Jr. gets emotional Lee County win

Mueller, Book, Wenig, Smith, Foster also get season opener wins
By Dewian Hulett - for Lee County Speedway

DONNELLSON, Iowa (April 29, 2011) – For the first time in 2011 Mother Nature didn’t threaten Friday night racing action in the area, as Lee County Speedway kicked of this year’s campaign with an emotional Late Model win by Ray Guss, Jr.

Other feature winners on the night included Dan Wenig, Hobby Stocks; Dylan Book, Sport Mods; Darin Smith, Wild Things; Jeff Mueller, Stock Cars; and Josh Foster, Modifieds.

With Mark Burgtorf and Guss, Jr. starting side-by-side on the front row of the 25-lap Late Model feature, it was sure to be a great feature event, and it turned out to be just that. Guss, Jr., took the lead into turn one and never trailed, as he was pressured through lapped traffic by Burgtorf in the green-to-checkered event. Jason Perry finished third, while Justin Reed took the fourth spot followed by Jeff Aikey in fifth.

Foster survived a couple late cautions and use the high side of the racetrack to pick up his first feature win of 2011, at Lee County Speedway. Dennis LeVeine pressured the leader through the last two-thirds of the event but couldn’t find a way past before settling for second. Brandon Rothzen came from the sixth row to finish third, while Tyler Cale moved from the fifth row to fourth. Jim Roach rounded out the top five.

Wenig didn’t start in the front row, but was there at the end of the first lap and led the entire way to pick up the first win of the season in the Donnellson Tire Hobby Stocks. While he was leading, there was all kinds of position swapping going on behind him, with cars passing, wrecking and falling out of the event. Eventually it was Dane Fenton finishing second, while Jim Lynch was third. Nick Fenton came home fourth and Ray Raker finished fifth.

Not sure if Mueller was fast to get the win, or was racing to get home to see his new baby, born Tuesday, but either was he was the class of the Stock Car field. Jim Redman and others were in a heated battle behind the leader, as he settled for second. Jason Cook, who fell to sixth at one point, rallied to take third. Matt Greiner was fourth and Cale Samberg finished fifth.

The Shottenkirk Parts Express IMCA Sport Mod feature was the first of the night, but didn’t set the stage overly well, as the caution filled event was timed out with just eight laps in the books. Nonetheless, Book took the win, followed by Mueller in his first Sport Mod event. Dean Kratzer took the third spot, followed by Mike Shelton, in fourth, and Rick Barlow, Jr., in fifth.

Smith made a late charge on the track to pick up the win over David Helenthal, who was later dq’d in tech. That moved Chuck Fullenkamp up to the second spot, while Wayne Noble was third. Craig Bangert, moved up to the fourth spot and Kimberly Abbott was fifth.

Racing action continues, Friday, May 6, with Tri-State Speed Review Night. Racing in five classes returns with Modfieds, Sport Mods, Stock Cars, Hobby Stocks and Wild Things. Gates open at 5 p.m., hot laps at 7 p.m. and racing 7:30 p.m. Kids come early and pot a flower for mom at the TA Auto & Tire Jr. Fan Club booth.
