Cossel holds on for Sport Mod win Foster wins number four, Wenig wins close Hobby Stock feature
By Dewain Hulett

DONNELLSON, Iowa (June 3, 2010) – A four car battle that ended with the third place car spinning backwards across the start finish line is how Phillip Cossel won the final feature event of the night, Friday during Casey General Store Fan Appreciation Night, at Lee County Speedway.

Cossel beat Jim Gillenwater and Joe Bliven, who was backwards when he crossed the line, to the strip to win the Shottenkirk Parts Express IMCA Sport Mod feature event.

Other feature winners included Josh Foster, Budweiser IMCA Modifieds; Jake Wenig, Donnellson Tire Hobby Stocks; Nick Wilkerson, Sunline Auto Parts Wild Things; and Matt Greiner, Miller IMCA Stock Cars.

After starting outside the front row, Cossel took the lead early in the event and survived pressure from Bliven, then Gillenwater and Jeff Mueller as the laps wound down. Bliven was long side Cossel on the front stretch with two to go when the two made contact. Cossel got sideways, but kept it going to straight.

As the field entered the final two turns on the last lap, Cossel went very high and Bliven dove to the inside. The two were even in the middle of three and four, before coming off turn four. Bliven’s car hit a slick spot and snapped around as they came to the front stretch. He was backwards which allowed Cossel and Gillenwater to get by. Mueller finished fourth, while Rodger Dresden had a strong run in fifth.

Dane Fenton came from sixth in the Hobby Stock feature to make an exciting feature out of a race that was dominated for the most part by Wenig. Fenton closed a lot of ground in the last lap in what turned out to be a two car race. Coming off turn four for the final time Fenton had gotten to the inside of Wenig, and as they came to the stripe Wenig let the car hang out scraping the entire right side down the wall at the stripe. But he held on for the win. Jim Lynch ran third, while Tanner Thomann was fourth and Mike Hugh was fifth.

After winning last week’s Smackdown, Rich Smith again found himself out front in the Budweiser IMCA Modified feature event, but this time it was Foster who returned the favor with a late race pass to pick up the win. Smith would hold on for second, while Andy Krieger and Rob Kirchner finished third and fourth respectively. Dennis LaVeine rounded out the top five.

Greiner started 11th, but used a couple great moves in traffic to get the front relatively quickly, and then held off a late charge from Ryan Cook to get the win. Cook would have to settle for second, followed by Jeff Mueller. Jim Redman was fourth and John Oliver, Jr., was fifth.

Nick Wilkerson took the lead early in the Wild Things feature and held off a hard charge from David Helenthal over the last two laps to get the win. Darin Smith was third, Bill Michel fourth and Mike Fisher fifth.

This Friday is KDMG Big Country 103.1 Night, with all five regular classes in action. Also, a Candy Dash will be held for the kids at intermission, and any graduates from the class or 2011 can bring a copy of your diploma to get in free! This includes High School and College graduates! Hope to see you at the track!
