Mueller double dips with pair of LCS wins Crear gets first LCS feature victory, Wenig, Helenthal win again
By Dewain Hulett - for Lee County Speedway

DONNELLSON, Iowa (June 17, 2011) – Jeff Mueller did what he’s wanted to do all year at Lee County Speedway, and Dustin Crear did what he’s been trying to do for several years at the 3/8th mile, Friday night.

It was win both the Shottenkirk Parts Express IMCA Sport Mods feature and Miller Lite IMCA Stock Car feature in the same night for Mueller, and win the Budweiser IMCA Modified feature for Crear. They both reached their goals, while Jake Wenig, Donnellson Tire Hobby Stocks, and David Helenthal, Sunline Auto Parts Wild Things, were also feature winners.

The most exciting race of the night came courtesy the Stock Car drivers, especially Corey Strothman, Mueller and Jason Cook. Strothman started out front and led the first 13 laps of the none-stop race. Cook and Mueller both caught Strothman on lap 14, with Mueller making the pass and a little contact as the pair he and Strothman crossed the start-finish line. Strothman jumped the cushion in turn two allowing Mueller to get away and Cook to slide underneath, but the race wasn’t over yet. Cook threw the car deep into turn three and was side-by-side with Mueller off turn four. There was no contact as the pair worked down the front stretch as Cook worked hard to keep his car glued to the bottom of the racetrack, and Mueller used the momentum of the middle groove to take the feature win. Cook settled for second, Strothman was third, while John Oliver, Jr. was third and Aaron Brocksieck was fifth.

Crear led every lap of the 15 lap Modified feature, but wasn’t without pressure, as Rich Smith found himself in second after the first lap and tried to no avail on nearly every lap to take the low line around Crear in turns one and two. A hooked up racecar on a heavy racetrack proved to be the perfect combination for Crear won for the first time at Lee County Speedway. While Smith held on for second, it was futility and carnage behind the front pair. Numerous cars were in the top 5 at different times, only to fall out of the race. The third through fifth spots eventually went to Brandon Banks, Adam Birck and Tyler Cale respectively.

Dean Krazter had the field covered in the Sport Mod feature event before a couple late race cautions bunched up the field and allowed Mueller the chance to get his other win. Mueller got to the inside of Kratzer on a restart with 11 laps down, and led at the conclusion of lap 12, he survived a restart of his own to pick up the win. Jim Gillenwater came from deep in the field, like Mueller, and got past Kratzer in the final set of turns to pick up the second spot, while Kratzer was forced to settle for third. Joe Bliven was the highest finishing crate motor in fourth, while Rod Staats rounded out the top five.

Helenthal started seventh but led at the end of the first lap and never was threatened as he picked up the Wild Things feature win. Nick Wilkerson and Bill Michel battled for second through much of the race, but could never catch Helenthal. Eventually Wilkerson would finish second and Michel third, while Darin Smith and Andrew Davis rounded out the top five.

While the racing through much of the top 5 was good in the Hobby Stock feature, Wenig made it pretty boring out front as he started on the poll and dominated throughout. Dan Wenig, Dane Fenton and Ray Raker, however, made the show exciting behind him as they moved through the field to battle for second third and fourth. Dan Wenig got to second and held on following a late race restart, while Raker made a late pass of Fenton to get third. Fenton would hold on for fourth, while Jim Lynch ran fifth.

Racing continues, Friday, June 24, with Family Motors Fan Appreciation Night and Big County 103.1 KDMG Night. Also, a large candy dash will be held for the kids. Don’t forget coming up June 30 is the annual Liberty Cup, with the Hawkeye Dirt Tour for IMCA Modifieds, along with Stock Cars and Sport Mods. Then, July 1, will be IMCA Late Models and 305 Sprint Cars at Lee County Speedway.
