Long dominates JR Motorsports Hawkeye Dirt Tour event at LCSWeller takes IMCA Stock Car check, Carter wins IMCA Sport Mods feature
By Dewain Hueltt

DONNELLSON, Iowa (June 30, 2011) – Michael Long, Quincy, Ill., started 10th and charged to the front of the JR Motosports Hawkeye Dirt Tour feature event at Lee County Speedway to dominate the last half of the race.

Long won by a straight away, while taking home the $1,000 payday.

Cayden Carter, Oskaloosa, Iowa, won the IMCA Sport Mods’ $700 prize, while Shane Weller took home the same payday for winning the IMCA Stock feature event.

While everyone in front of him ran the low line, Long took his Gillenwater Racing machine to the high side and caught early race leader Ronn Lauritzen and Tyler Cale midway through the event. The three-wide battle lasted the length of the backstretch, as Long ran away on the high side to the lead.

One caution slowed the race the rest of the way, after several early cautions, while Long dominated with the straightaway win.

Cale held on for a solid second, while Wyatt Lantz took third spot. Josh Foster, who went to the pits after a lap one caution, came from 24th to fourth, and Todd Hansen made a late charge to fifth.

In the 20 lap Sport Mods feature, Carter took the lead from Brad Lautenbach on the 11th circuit and was never challenged as he pulled away for the win. Carter was the first to find the low in turns one and two and high in turns three and four line that worked for he and Long.

Lautenbach, after leading half the race finished second, while Carter VanDenBerg took the third spot. Lucas Lundry finished fourth after starting on the front row, and Rodger Dresden finished fifth as the only Lee County regular in the top five.

The feature was marred by a 10 car pile up in turn one of the first lap that luckily only cost the race one car.

It was a Weller domination most of the way in the IMCA Stock Car feature. But Damon Murty tried to spoil the Angency, Iowa, driver’s fun when he took the lead at lap 15. The time at the top was short lived for Murty, however, as Weller was able to retake the lead with two laps to go in the feature event.

Murty was forced to take a second, while Abe Huls moved to third and Matt Greiner slid to fourth, after running second much of the race. Justin Teymeyer rounded the top five.

The Stock Car feature was slowed near its midway point when Blaine Dopler got upside down in turn three, which collected Derek St. Clair and sent him onto his side. Dopler’s night was over, but St. Clair’s car was set back on its wheels and he finished the race in 17th spot.

Racing continues tonight at Lee County Speedway, as the IMCA Late Models make their second of three appearances at the 3/8th mile oval for the 2011 season. Also on the card will be 305 Sprint Cars, IMCA Modifieds, Hobby Stocks and Wild Things. Hot laps start at 7 p.m. with racing at 7:30 p.m.
