June Ends On High Note At Speedway!
By Denny Grabenbauer

MARSHALLTOWN, IA. (June 30, 2006) - The incredible month of June came to an end on Friday night at the Marshalltown Speedway after three nights of racing action this week. Monday and Tuesday night of the Stock Car Shoot-Out will be remembered as two nights of record car counts, represented by eight visiting states and two local competitors out distancing the racing visitors to capture a crown jewel of motorpsorts. Damon Murty from Chelsea and Donovan Smith from Lake City went home with the top prizes in the I.M.C.A. Stock Car and I.M.C.A. Hobby Stock divisions. “I just can’t be happier,” said promoter Toby Kruse. “We set a new record with seventy-one Stock Cars from eight different states and Iowa competing on our race track. Everyone I have talked to in the community have been very appreciative on our over night visitors and the money that they brought into there business and that is a good feeling knowing that we are here to serve the community.”

With the first part of the racing week fresh in everybody’s mind, it was time to look toward the Friday night racing program. Eighty-three race teams were on hand Friday night to challenge the high-banked quarter mile speedway once again.

Damon Murty would continue his weekly success by take the lead on lap four then drive away from the rest of the field in the I.M.C.A. Stock Car feature. “This week has just been a week come true,” said Murty. “The track has been just right to where it seems to fit my car, the car has work perfectly and I just can’t believe the way things turn out.” Kyle Krampe would take the early lead but would give way to Luke Veren on lap two. Veren would hold off Murty for only two laps before the “Chelsea Charger” would storm to the front and go on for the win. Last week feature winner Shawn Hoskins would finish second followed by point leader Tracy Gienger and Dusty Vis.

Donovan Smith would carry the same wining streak into Friday night and would do the same as Murty as he would take the lead from Dustin Elliott on lap six to score his eighth I.M.C.A. Hobby Stock feature win of the season. The only thing that would slow Smith was a yellow flag with three laps to go. On the restart it would be all Smith. Elliott would finish second followed by Pat Cross and Zach Rawlins.

Point leader Jason Mallicoat would have to work for his forth feature win of the season as rookie driver Kyle Brown was driving like a seasoned veteran. Brown would take the lead on the opening lap and hold the lead until lap eight of the fifteen-lap I.M.C.A. Sport Mod feature. Mallicoat would lead laps eight and nine, but Brown stormed back into the lead on lap ten. As the two raced each other side by side then bumper to bumper Mallicoat would edge Brown at the line by a mere one foot margin for the victory. “This was one of the hardest races I think I ever ran, the kid just wouldn’t make a mistake, it was really fun,” said Mallicoat said a smiling in the victory lane celebration. Unfortunately Brown did not make the weight requirements and was disqualified, moving Brett Ladehoff to second followed by Scott Durlin and Keith Williamson.

Vern Jackson would come out on top in the I.M.C.A. Modifieds by just being in the right place at the right time. The start of the twenty-lap event would become a two and three car battle right from the start. Jimmy Gustin would jump into the early lead and lead the first two laps before Mike O’Lear would take his turn at the front. Three wide racing would follow until a yellow flag would come out on lap four. On the restart week seven winner Adam Bolin would put the pressure on O’Lear for the lead and would take the lead after a yellow on lap thirteen. Another yellow on lap seventeen would again bunch up the already tight field with now last week’s winner Todd Luther putting him in position for yet another win. With one lap to go, Luther would make a low side move on Bolin. As the two drivers exited turn two, Luther jumped the left front tire of Bolin slowing the field. Jackson would take a hard left had turn, pass the two tangled cars and would go on to score his first win of the year. “I just can’t believe it,” said Jackson in victory lane. “For once I was in the right spot at the right time. I seen it all happening in front of me, I made the right decision and got away from them and there was no one in front of me. I am going to call this one a lucky win, but I’ll take it.” Bolin would finish second followed by O’Lear and Kevin Stoa.

The month of July will also be a very busy month with the racing continuing next Friday night. Then on Tuesday night July 11th, the show of shows will take to the raceway. “This Tuesday night will be one of the most talked about races of the year when the I.M.C.A. Late Models return to the raceway in conjunction with the Central Iowa Fair,” say’s Kruse. “It’s been six years since the Late Models have raced here and everybody has been waiting for this. Just to see Darrell DeFrance race at his home track is what people have been asking for and we are going to give it to them.”

The grandstand will open next Friday night at 5:30 with hot laps starting at 6:45 and the first race of the night will get underway at 7:30.
