Aarons Fair Night at the Marshalltown Speedway!
By Denny Grabenbauer
MARSHALLTOWN, IA (July 13) - After a beautiful, mild and just a great week for
the Central Iowa Fair, the roar of motors and the Aarons Night at the Fair took
place this past Friday night. An infield area with over one hundred race teams
greeted the capacity crowd and temperature in the low eighty’s, as drivers and
fans were ready for the competition of the night. “This has been a tough week on
our guys that work on the track. With all that has been going on they have had
to reach back and put out extra in getting things ready for tonight”, said
promoter Toby Kruse. “Normally we are putting water on the track all week long,
but with the activities we just had to work extra long on Thursday night into
Friday, and we just did what we could do. We had more dust tonight than I really
like, but there were two to three lanes on the track, and our drivers did a
great job of adjusting”.
All classes would see repeat winners on the evening except ironically, the
Aarons I.M.C.A. Stock Car class. Mike VanGenderen would score his first Stock
Car feature win on Friday night after battling to the end, by running a high
side line, working through lap traffic and taking the lead with only two laps to
go in the green-to-checkered eighteen lap feature event. Kyle Krampe would lead
the opening lap before giving up the lead to Luke Veren on lap four. Veren would
lead the next twelve laps while running on the low side of the track as
VanGenderen was making his charge to the front. Mike would stay high, Veren low
as the two battle side by side. That ‘s how it would end with VanGenderen the
winner, Veren second followed by Tracy Gienger and Steve Meyer.
Vern Jackson continued his winning ways in the I.M.C.A. Modified division.
Jackson’s win would keep the Waterloo veteran on his toes through out the race.
Jackson would take the lead from Dain Sires on lap four. It looked like Jackson
would have things his way, but J.D. Auringer was thinking about another win for
himself. Through out the next ten laps the two drivers would exchange the lead
on almost every lap. Four lap cars with five laps to go would have the pair
carefully picking there spots on the track before Jackson would pull away and go
on to score his forth win of the season. Finish second was point leader Jimmy
Gustin followed by Auringer and Brett Ladehoff.
Yellow flags and a red flag would slow the I.M.C.A. Sport Mods in their
fifteen-lap feature event. The most serious incident of the evening came when
Zach Rawlins found himself flipping off turn one. Rawlins exited the car unhurt,
but the badly damaged car was done for the night. Brett Meyer who had trouble in
his heat race would start dead last in the feature take the lead by lap seven
and go on to score his second feature win of the season. Jason Mallicoat, Kevin
Sather and Danny Dvorak would round out the top four.
Opening night feature winner Trent Murphy would again find his way to victory in
the I.M.C.A. Hobby Stock class. Murphy would take the lead at the half waypoint
to score his second feature of the season. Luke Wanninger would finish second
followed by Beau Kaplan and Dustin Elliott.
Mike Morrill would work his way up front in the Dwarf Car feature to pick up his
second win of the year. Point lead Andy Hennigar would finish second with Mike
Kennedy third and Ed Zehm forth.
The season continues next Friday night with the gates opening at 5:30, hot laps
to follow at 6:45 and the first race of the night will begin at 7:30.
