Racing Past And Present This Friday at Marshalltown Speedway
By Denny Grabenbauer

MARSHALLTOWN, IA (Aug 17) - Friday night was truly a full night of racing memories as J & V NAPA week number seventeen roared to life at the high-banked quarter mile raceway at the Marshalltown Speedway. The night was filled with many surprises, as drivers from the past were on hand to celebrate Nostalgic Night at the races. Cars and drivers from days gone by were on hand to compete in vintage classes that have been put together from around the state of Iowa. Even drivers from the South Dakota and Nebraska were on hand to take part in the racing action. Central Vintage Racing Association was the sanctioning body representing the vintage cars, which ranged from the years of 1930 to 1946. Three unique divisions were represented as they competed in the Vintage Stock, Modified Stock and Super Modified.

Wade Russell driving his 1934 Chevy Sedan would win the Vintage Association feature event. Russell would take the win over last years winner Dave Farren who finished second. Third place and driving his 1931 ford Coupe was Dan Osborn with forth place going to Ron Coon, from Omaha Nebraska.

Next up would be the Dwarf Car feature event. Normally the Dwarf Cars would run green to checkered, but on this night with anticipation running high, it would take the third start before one lap would be scored. Johnny Mordock would lead the first three laps before Mike Morrill stormed to the front. Morrill would be challenged but would hold the top spot to the end to score his fifth feature of the year. Andy Hennigar, Brent Detrick and Troy Hudson followed Morrill across the finish line.

Rain would not dampen the evening as the threat of rain and lightning could be seen west of the speedway but lady luck was on the side of promoter Toby Kruse as he marched the program on. “We were told that weather was moving in, so we kept things moving on our end and just as the last feature of the evening finished, the sky’s opened the rain fell just as the checkered flag was waved bringing the evening to an end. We will start next Friday night with our Aarons Victory Lane interviews and sometime through the night we will have our Hobby Stock King of the Hill event”, concluded Kruse.

Third time would be the charm for Bo Hunter in the I.M.C.A. Hobby Stock class. Hunter who has been running up front in the past three features only to have an incident take him out of the top spot would battle with rookie driver Jennifer Hulin to the end to capture his first feature in six years at the speedway. Hunter would take the win but the determined Hulin would have the capacity crowd standing and cheering throughout the twelve-lap feature event. Hulin would lead lap one right up to the half way point when point leader Luke Wanninger would take the lead. Hulin would not give up because on lap eight she again would retake the lead. Lap ten Hunter would sneak by for the lead only to have Hulin stay in striking distance. With one lap to go, Hunter would take a full car length lead into the third corner, and then would hold off Hulin to score his memorable victory. Hulin would have a career best finish of second followed by Todd Reitzler and Nick Murty.

Rick Brown would take the lead of the opening lap of the Aarons I.M.C.A. Stock Car feature and would hold the top spot until lap six when Luke Veren would charge to the front. Brown and Veren had finished one and two during previous weeks but this time Veren would stay up front and go on to score his third win of the season. Brown would finish second and was followed across the finish line by Donovan Smith and Mike Nichols.

I.M.C.A. Modified driver Vern Jackson proved to be unbeatable again. The lead would change hands twice before Jackson stormed to the front on lap three. Never really challenged through out the twenty-lap feature event, Jackson would find his way around the lap traffic and would go on to score his seventh feature of the year. Point lead Jimmy Gustin, who now owns a one-point advantage with two week remaining finished second followed by fourteen year old Nate Caruth in third with Brett Ladehoff finishing forth.

Kyle Brown would again lead the opening lap of the I.M.C.A. Sport Mod feature. Fred Schimmels took the lead on lap two, Brown would regain the lead on lap three and lead up to the tenth lap when another fourteen year old, Brett Moffitt would take the lead and go on to score his third feature win in as many weeks. Brown would hold on to second followed by Brett Meyer in third and Danny Dvorak in forth. When the checkered flag dropped, the rains came and the night was done.

Next Friday night the season will move into it’s final two weeks of the season. The gates will open at 5:30 with hot laps at 6:45. Aarons Victory Lane interviews will begin at 7:15 with the first green flag of the evening starting at 7:30.
