Havoc On The Highbanks

MARSHALLTOWN, IA (Sept. 15) - For the first time in over 30-years, an end of the season special event took place at the Marshalltown Speedway. “Havoc on the High Banks” took place with 265-drivers competing from 5-different states over Friday and Saturday nights at the high-banked quarter mile raceway. Cold windy and a mixture of rain wouldn’t dampen the spirits of second year promoter Toby Kruse. “This was another one of my goals to bring back a fall event. We have it started and now we can grow it into one of those events that you must see during a season”.

Close and intense racing on a wide an smooth race track would make for a multi-groove track which races would enjoy. Three and four wide racing would not be uncommon as drivers would have their choice in running high, low or in the middle of the raceway.

Jimmy Gustin would prove to be unstoppable both nights, as he started in the same eleventh starting position and finished each night in the number one spot. Gustin would use the high side to his advantage as he clearly proved to be the class of the field both night in the I.M.C.A. Modified division. Gustin would out distance John Logue and Vern Jackson in the opening night, then would do the same to Nate Caruth and TJ Stalker in night number two.

Luke Veren would finish in the runner up position on Friday night in the Aarons I.M.C.A. Stock Car feature behind Sean Johnson. Saturday night Veren would lead from start to finish to score the victory in day number two.

Friday night winner Jason Mallicoat in the I.M.C.A. Sport Mod feature, appeared to make a clean sweep of the weekend until getting tied up behind a lap car with only two laps remaining which would cost him his second weekend win. Austin Kaplan would benefit from the misfortunes and go on to take the victory.

Engine trouble would affect Friday’s winner Terry Shaffar both nights in the I.M.C.A. Hobby Stock feature. Friday night, Shaffar would hang on to score the victory but Saturday the trouble would force him to the side lines. Trent Murphy would finish a strong third place on Friday night then would finish even stronger on Saturday night as he would score the victory by taking the lead on the final lap. Jamie Schirm would finish second followed by Josh Irvine in third.

Mike Kennedy would win on Friday night and Troy Hudson would take the win on Saturday night in the Dwarf Car features.

With the checkered flag coming out at 10:40 on both nights, the 2007 racing season is now history. “We had a good year, even with the five rainouts it is a year that all of us can be proud of”, said promoter Toby Kruse.
